June 7 Coasting

Nucleus has assumed the Portland crown of mass individual multiple shows.

It began in Portland in 2001 with Charm Bracelet, organized by Brad Adkins and Chris Buckingham. It continued with Chris Haberman and Jason Brown in a variety of spaces, including the Pioneer Place Mall, home to the ill-fated WeWork.

Tonight it is the 11th Aniversary Salut!, original art on drink coasters. Mass multiple shows are the zeitgeit for today, individual artworks, small, easy to move, and not necessary to have expensive framing.

Each artwork is $80. Cash/card and carry. A line will form, pre-the doors. They estimate the line will be down by 2:30 or 3. All sales final.

The 283 artists, each contributing several individual works for a total of more than 1000 are drawn from the global Nucleus stable: A.C. Esguerra, A.M.Sartor, Aaron Piland, Aaron Robert Baker, Adam Stoner, Adriana Lozano, Alex Cabal, Alex Gold, Alina Chau, Allie Yacina, Allison May Kiphuth, Alvaro Escobar-Fuentes, Amber Aki Huang, Amber Feng, Amy Earles, Andi Soto, Andrea Kang, Andrea Lauren, Andrea Sipl, Andrés Guzmán, Andrew Brandou, Andrew Ghrist, Angela Ramones, Anuj Shrestha, Ariel Lee, Art of Yayu, ArtCyll, Athena Parella, Authan Chen, Aya K, Bags43, Bao Pham, Ben McEntee, Benz and Chang, Beverly Arce, Bird Cvlt, Blake Jones, brayniac, Brian Holderman, Brian Serway, Brianna Miller, Brooks Shane Salzwedel, Bryce Wymer, Burrito Breath, Caleb Sinchok, Camila Rosa, Candie Bolton, Carolina Lebar, Cassandra Kim, Chad Keith, Chelsea Beck, Chelsea Blecha, Christian Leon Guerrero, Christina Hu, Chrystal Sea, Claire Merchlinsky, Cleonique Hilsaca, Cody Jimenez, Cris James, Cristina Bencina, Crystal Dawn Chaffee, D. June 1 - August 31 Get Bikey

Not art but a beautiful Portland phenomenon. Bike summer begins.

Portland bikey has many historical vectors including alleycats, continuing, but at its prime when we had physical messengers on fixies, Zoobombing, a 2 week Minibike Summer in 2003, and Minibike Winter, 2004. Minibike Winter, with travelers to Portland to engage, corresponded with the Light Bar organized by Mykle Hanson, https://msl.mykle.com/category/inventions/, social practice artist before that was invented at his home on Killingsworth in the month of February. The Light Bar led to the Winter Light Festival. Originally Minibike Summer, Pedalpaloosa expanded to the entire Summer.

It's open source. Anyone can organize a ride and seeing the website, anyone can join. Some are costumed and many have themes. The naked bike rides are part of it too.

May 30 - 31 Works

The Unkles family is one of Portland unsung art patrons. They rent space for artist studios. They parlayed the family business into buying warehouses. In the 1990s warehouses were plentiful and inexpensive. But city regulation, and the lust by tech for warehouse offices, ended that. The Unkles family maintains the tradition, only raising the rent when the studio changes artist.

Today is a rare opportunity to look inside one, the NW Marine Art Works. For these events, the artists usually straighten their studios. And, for this one, guest artists will bring work from the Seed Building, River Studios, the Boathouse, and Carton Services deemed not suited for large events by the City. They have also invited artists and crafters from outside the Unkles family studios.

The big list of some of the participating artists, food, drink, and music is https://www.nwmarineartworks.com/summer26.

Don't miss Dale's choose your own adventure, it is not often open in the Winter studios. Of course you are encouraged to buy art direct and experience the narratives of each artist. It's family friendly with live music, food and drink. There is more parking in the Powells parking lot to the North on 29th and the studios are on the 15 TriMet.

May 28 Forest is Alive, Magic is Afoot

Field Studies (Symbiosis) by Fernanda D’Agostino, Lisa DeGrace, and Laura Kathrein opens today. Field Studies is an immersive multiscreen installation interpreting research on plant consciousness in forests through art.

From D’Agostino: "For the last year composer Lisa DeGrace, choreographer Laura Kathrein and I have engaged in a series of 'Field Studies' focused on the Boreal Forest and the emerging science of plant consciousness and communication. Along the way we’ve had retreats in the forests of Vermont, collaborated with microscopists and ecologists, and explored embodiment with the brilliant performance artists Lisa Kusanagi and Jaleesa Johnston who, along with Laura, submerged their human ways of knowing temporarily to imagine other ways of sensing the world. Like my last project 'Mar, Mar, e Mar,' this work is deeply rooted in the notion of symbiosis, which scientists now recognize as an essential foundation of life on Earth. Our year of research has resulted in the synthesis of our three practices into a performance/installation 'Field Studies;Symbiosis.'

I’ll be traveling to Venice, Italy where single channel versions of Field Studies will be shown at four exhibitions organized by United Media Artists in parallel with the Venice Biennale . If you are in Venice for the opening of the Biennale, come through! I’ll be there May 4-11."

Terry Riley was born in 1935. He is famous for In C, 1964, a landmark in minimalism. I had that in vinyl when I had vinyl. In Portland, Michael Sterling, Lewis & Clark instructor, studied with Terry Riley and guested performances and workshops by Riley here. May 13-16 Butoh Here Now

Butoh is a contemporay dance form birthed in Japan in 1959. Some know it, to others it is liminal from media blips. Ultimately is an improvised somatic performance, liminal in that respect. It is a beautiful and challenging niche in culture. Butoh has NW concentrations in Seattle, BC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boulder, Chicago, New York, Mexico, more. That includes Portland organized by Carl Annala.

If you like, the movie Butoh: Body on the Edge of Crisis gives a history.

Portland's most famous butoh performer, Mizu, has ridden off into the sunset with her love. With that, Portland has a continuing butoh festival and workshops throughout the year.

This year visiting artists are Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh, Julie Becton Gillum, Minja Mertanen, Vanessa Skantze, Iván Espinosa and Co, Ash Pillar, Arlo King, Amapola, Salty Xi Jie Ng, Olga Kravtsova, Monel Chang, and Didi (Freddi) Wyss.

For movers, Minja Mertanen, Vanessa Skantze, Julie Becton Gillum and Joan Laage/Kogut teach workshops. The workshops are a bargain.

Last year, the festival was graciously hosted by Portland Art Collective. Now it occupies the New Expressive Works studio.

The Northwest Butoh Festival in Portland. https://northwestbutohfestival.crd.co/ https://newexpressiveworks.org/nwbutohfestival2026 at New Expressive Works Studio 810 SE Belmont.

Workshops Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 6PM-10, 10AM-2, and 10AM-2 respectively. Prices in links.

Laurie Anderson continues to perform. She is known for her writing and spoken word performances, singing, and electronic instruments. Miranda July is a performer familiar to many. I promoted her to PICA, successfully. Marina Abramović, with a work in Venice, now is known for psychological and physical risks in performance. The three, Anderson, Abramović, and July have a show together in Copenhagen now. https://www.nbt.dk/en/shows/in-the-presence-of-others/ The show ends May 17.

April 26 Rain Sun Flower Shrine

Lowell pairs artists Shino Takeda and Mohamed Omar for show Rain Sun Flower.

The aesthetic language of Japanese ceramics is deep and wide. I think it would take a lifetime to begin to understand. Growing up, artist Takeda http://shinotakeda.com/home was dipped in it by collector parents. Now in Brooklyn, she brings her response by juxtaposing color in organic patterns on small handbuilts.

I am not sure if Portlander Mohamed Omar was part of Project Grow. But his story is related.

Project Grow was created by artist Natasha Wheat. I would say it was partially inspired by the philosophy of R D Laing.

It was Portland's most beautiful Social Practice artwork. I put Project Grow in the branch of 'socially conscious social practice art.' I would like to see more.

Art is a language of individuals, always evolving and branching. We give bundles of branches names by convenience and habit. One branch is outsider art. It has a longer history in Europe; in the US it came into the gallery system as a reaction of the excesses of 1980s New York.

Project Grow ran alongside Oakland's Creative Growth and similar. Today Portland has Elbow Room, North Pole Studio, PHAME, cotravelers J Pepin, and more projects that never went to art school.

Omar brings paintings from his work at Elbow Room https://www.elbowroompdx.org/. He is a musician too, with tapes available at the gallery.

Add, Hospitality House in SF has an overlapping community of artists. Portland participates with similar projects P:ear and Dana Lynn Louis' Gather:Make:Shelter.

April 25 Intimate Music Self

Kimberly Gronquist forms Intimate Monads, organic ceramic sculptures.

They win the copywriting award for the month. "A word like monad risks sounding grandiose until you stand in front of one of Gronquist’s sculptures and feel the term settle. Borrowed from Leibnizian symbolic logic, it names the smallest indivisible unit of being, a self-contained world. In this way Gronquist’s works conduct a small cosmos pressed into clay. Each object existing solitary, self-possessed, while simultaneously conversing quietly across the gallery, forming a loose ecology of presences.

Originating in touch the clay bears evidence of fingers, gravity, pressure, and air forming a material history of the gestures that shaped it. These deliberate and discovered arrangements that seem grown rather than constructed. The process reveals almost like a form of thinking, or an embodied cognition in which ideas are not depicted but coaxed out of matter.

The shifting scale and intimacy of the sculptures keep them close to the body. Each one holds a small interior drama of time: a vessel formed slowly through attention, then fixed by fire. Psychologist Laura L. Carstensen’s notion of “time horizons”—the way human perception of time shapes our priorities, hovers in the background. These ceramics feel oddly liberated from time even as they record it.

Gronquist describes the work as an investigation into the porous boundary between inner consciousness and the world that forms it. The idea sounds philosophical, but the sculptures communicate it plainly. Their surfaces look weathered by encounter. They materially imply that identity like clay is made through the contact of touch, environment, attention, and relationships.

There is also a quiet defiance running through the exhibition. The work honors sovereign interiority over the social demand to appear legible or productive. They embrace beauty, excess, and vulnerability with a seriousness, as Gronquist leans into those qualities despite the history of them being dismissed as indulgent. What could be read as softness becomes strength; what looks fragile reveals a stubborn independence to exist among the chaos.

One line lingers as a fitting epigraph for the show: “We are two abysses—a well staring up at the sky.” The phrase captures the mood of these objects. Each sculpture seems to look inward and outward at once, holding a private depth while opening toward something larger, formed, sustained, and continually remade through our encounters with the world and with one another."

April 18 Fuck Thesis Moss Formailities

Gareth James and David Joselit bring Late Night Legal Formalities. Society has a strong interest in word-based art.

"2026 marks the 20th anniversary of Late Night Legal Formalities, originally produced for the Elizabeth Dee Gallery in New York. LNLF was devised by James as a way of negotiating Dee’s request for him to join her commercial gallery. Prior to his first exhibition, Dee agreed to hire an art historian or critic to attend every exhibition during 2005 and to write an essay, for a fee of $1 a word, over which the gallery would have no editorial control, and which James would subsequently present in the September exhibition of the following year as his first exhibition. David Joselit lobbed a strikingly candid response back to James who incorporated it into the work on view."

April 5 - 2026-2027 Never Sorry

Ai Weiwei is an artist we follow. His autobiography 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows tells some of his story. He was born in 1957. Because of his father's politics, he lived in poor conditions. After he was part of an art opening generation in Beijing, which then quickly closed. Then he lived in New York City between 1981 - 1993. He was a street photographer in NYC, including the Tompkins Square Park police riot and AIDS protests. Since his New York experience, politics and (the lack of) justice has run through his work.

In 2010, The late Portland Museum of Contemporary Craft brought a traveling show Ai Weiwei: Dropping the Urn (Ceramic Works, 5000 BCE – 2010 CE). Weiwei's father had been an antiques dealer and the son has used antiques and Chinese history as a visual, emotional, and conceptual carrier in many of his works.

Of about 10,000 New York City images, 227 were shown at the Asia Society and published as a book in 2011 around the time of his release from being disappeared in China for 81 days. https://gailpellettproductions.com/ai-weiwei-new-york-1983-1993/

In 2012, the Portland Art Museum brought Allison Klayman's documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry. She is an excellent person and filmmaker to watch. That includes her The Brink on Steve Bannon. I recommend any Weiwei documentary and his own vidio projects. Never Sorry is around but may be hard to find free with English subtitles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBWCqFHjqIw

In 2015, the Portland Art Museum brought Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads: Gold. Weiwei has created several interpretations of this reprise of famous sculptures stolen from China in 1860. https://archive.orartswatch.org/ai-weiwei-interprets-the-zodiac-for-you/ https://www.pdxmonthly.com/arts-and-culture/2015/05/bring-us-the-heads-of-ai-weiwei-may-2015

Lately Weiwei has focused his lens on refugees of wars of choice in the Middle East. He has also been in Ukraine.

The Seattle Art Museum brought a large retrospective in 2025.

Now opens Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads (2010) in bronze at the Seattle Art Museum Olympic Sculpture Park. It's up for a while and the Olympic Sculpture Park is always free. April 1 Rewind / Repeat

Nam June Paik (1932-2006) is a pioneer video artist I've mentioned. Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV is a nice documentary telling his story.

Paik is noted as one of the artists and creatives anticipating the Internet. Others would be Marshall McLuhan, with the Global Village, and Gene Youngblood, author of Expanded Cinema and Mass Media, the Future of Desire.

An early gallery supporter was the Carl Solway Gallery https://solwaygallery.com/ in little Cincinnati, Ohio, and big New York, New York. Both Carl Solway and Nam June Paik are deceased. There was some sort of irresolvable dispute between the estate of the gallery and the estate of the artist.

Meanwhile Korea has become an art and culture hub.

Steps in Gagosian.

Nam June Paik: Rewind / Repeat opens today in Seoul. Supported by the estate, it shows significant works in the artist's home town. It follows the closing of https://www.artsinohio.com/event/76721-nam-june-paik-in-cincinnati-a-history hosted by the local university.

The Sou'wester Lodge art weekend has expanded to support an art space in Ilwaco, a very low budget hamlet in the Southern Long Beach penninsula by the bridge.

The artists work for a week at a minimal hotel fee. They guest you me and everyone we know to experience the work and meet the artists. It is family friendly. Some events are children's workshops.

March 6 Beam Me Up

Emily Wise brings paintings Meet Me at the Mothership, winning the copywriting award.

"This collection expands Wise’s exploration into femininity, relational intimacy, and the symbolic dimensions of the natural world. Prompted in part by a recent trip to Utah, where vast desert terrains and geologic formations foregrounded questions of origin, endurance, and scale, Wise uses landscape as both subject and metaphor for maternal presence.

In this series, Wise develops the concept of the “Mothership” as a multivalent figure: cosmological, terrestrial, and corporeal. The term operates simultaneously as mythic archetype and contemporary psychological inquiry, invoking ideas of provision, protection, and generative capacity. Through this framework, Wise interrogates what constitutes a maternal quality, not as biological determinism, but as an affective and spatial condition shaped by care, reciprocity, and interdependence."

Along with The Pollinators, an installation by Jessie Rose Vala.

At Stephanie Chefas Gallery www.stephaniechefas.com 134 SE Taylor, Ste 203. Map. 5PM-8 Free

Eric W Mast, Charlie Salas-Humara, Sean Purl Samoheyl have a show of abstaract paintings. Their copywritting wins too:

"Everyone has a tiny rectangle of two dimensional visual stimulus in their pocket these days, but it doesn’t seem to do much more than waste your time and fry your attention span, making you feel aggravated with its constant stream of bad news and reminders about what’s wrong with the world. So for these show we made small, calm, good news rectangles; hand made, meditative images with no reference to the “real world” and its dead end, gang warfare, partisan, corporate owned propaganda. These rectangles just sit around and you can give them as much or as little attention as you like, and they will never tell you what to think.

Abstraction is interesting to me because you have to create a new a new vocabulary of mark making and build something with that, but it allows room for spontaneity that you can’t always get with representational painting. It’s a bit like writing poetry with your own made up words. Or like scatting, in both sense of the word; singing wordless vocalizations and also smearing shit around on a canvas until it says something interesting.

Charlie and I were talking about doing a show together that focused on small abstract paintings, since we both usually do bigger pieces, and it would be an exercise to step out of our comfort zone. We thought Sean would be a good fit for this so we asked him to join us.

'These boys all had good GPAs in school and are now fulfilling an important market niche for abstract painting.' -The Chief Executive of Abstract Art"

March 1 Grand Style Folk Art

Copalito is a show of vintage folk art from Oaxaca. Manuel Jiménez Ramírez (1919 - 2005) originated alebrijes, wood-carved animals painted with bright contrasting colors. Since they have been carved by many famiies.

Señor Ramírez story is worth a read, in the folklore of the region he was considered a nahual, a shaman who could shapeshift to animal and shares a soul with an animal guardian. https://en.artemarakame.com/Blogs/about-Oaxacan-alebrijes-2/biography-of-manuel-jimenez.

This show is simpler animal carvings in the alebrijes tradition. There is also a book on the art form, Animals of Oaxaca, by Shinji Iwamoto for sale in the shop.

"By the early 60s [Ramírez] had outgrown the gallery that first promoted his work, and they in turn were actively looking for wood carvers who could fulfill the demand for the style of work Jimenez had created. the four Santiago brothers, farmers by trade, also turned out to be brilliant and prolific. the illusive Zarate family began making work at this time, and the gifted carver Isidoro Cruz was hired by the government to teach the art form in the region and promote it in the rest of Mexico. By the 1970s, Jimenez's animalitos had taken on a life of their own, as the number of carvers continued to grow and the sons and daughters of the first wave of artists took up the craft."
