December 6 & 7 Marine Air
The Unkles family is one of Portland unsung art patrons. They rent space for artist studios. They parlayed the family business into buying warehouses. In the 1990s warehouses were plentiful and inexpensive. But city regulation, and the lust by tech for warehouse offices, ended that. The Unkles family maintains the tradition, only raising the rent when the studio changes artist.
Today is a rare opportunity to look inside one, the NW Marine Art Works. For these events, the artists usually straighten their studios. And, for this one, guest artists will bring work from the Seed Building, River Studios, the Boathouse, and Carton services deemed not suited for large events by the City. They have also invited artists and crafters from outside the Unkles family studios.
The big list of some of the participating artists, fod, drink, and music is https://www.nwmarineartworks.com/winter25.
Of course you are encouraged to buy art direct and experience the narratives of each artist. It's family friendly with live music, food and drink. Open studios at NW Marine Art Works 2516 NW 29th. 10AM-4PM Free

November 5 Eastside Art Openings
Earthbound Dracology is a show by three illustrators. They win the unusual copywriting award for the month.
"These five dragons do not fly.
All bear wings, yet all remain pressed to the ground: rooted, folded, listening to the slow breath of matter. What emerges through the paintings is a Dracology of earth —a mythology born from touch, smell, humidity, sediment, and the dense tactility of guache and pastel.
Each dragon arises from a different state of matter: -the Mother, dissolving into soil and moss -the Father, born of bitumen, sulphur, and broken stone - the Keeper, curled on the seafloor around shells of hidden light - the Son, blossoming from gas and residue into blue fire - the Elder, resting between autumn trees, a guardian of memory and peace
Together, they form a cycle of origins, erosions, preservations, combustions, and returns.
They are spirits of a world before symbols—creatures halfway between geology and biography, where the strata of earth mirror the strata of the self."
The artists are Jack Howl under the name Beachghost from Melbourne, Chanel Tang and Ambrose Rehorek under the name Creature Creature from Melbourne, and Daniele Castellano from Bologna.
See the dragons https://www.nucleusportland.com/blogs/future-exhibitions/beach-ghost-creature-creature at Nucleus House Gallery https://www.nucleusportland.com/ 1137 NE Alberta 5PM-7 Free

December 4 Everyday Materials
KSMOCA is situated in a pre-K/K-5 school. It is the other arts magnet school. It's too cool. It started with art parents, adopted by social practice professors, it engages students with working artist residencies. Every child is an artist. The goal is not to lose that in doubt.
Yoonhee Choi makes large fields of small objects using everyday materials and works on paper with a simipar feel, almost like maps. Spring Stroll is her project with the student artists of KSMOCA.
The project included paper making and dyes with each grade based on the obangsaek color system.
The exhibition opening takes place in the Cafetorium hallway and is open to the public.
Please stop by the Main Office to sign in and receive a visitor pass to the school. At KSMOCA in the King K-8 School 4906 NE 6th. 10AM Free

November 24 You(Tube)
Getting To Know You(Tube)! was a series launched in 2011 by artists Stefan Ransom and Crystal Baxley, https://pica.org/artists/CrystalBaxley&StefanRansom, with Mike Merrill at the Hollywood Theater. It operated to mid-2016. It was an OG social practice art project.
After the June 2016 show, their website was hijacked by a shoe store. https://web.archive.org/web/20250000000000*/http://www.gettingtoknowyoutube.com/
Artists bring obsessive works they have found on YouTube and show them. Their algorithm is not your algorithm, so you may see some unusual-to-you short movies. The selection of presenters through its original about 5 year cycle is an impressive record. Getting To Know You(Tube)! returns tonight to the Boathouse.
Selections by Juli Yen Davis, Natalie Jane Edson, and Vm Zellers.

November 20-23 Rothko
The Portland Art Museum reopens after remodeling, re-hanging the collection, and joining the two buildings with the Rothko Pavilion. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are free for all. Advance tickets are required, with a limited number of walkups subject to capacity.
Mark Rothko came to Portland as an immigrant from Latvia at age 10. No ICE in those days. He graduated from Lincoln, then went to Yale. He had an arc of painting styles before settling into his abstract colorfields. The museum has an arrangement with the Rothko family to borrow a rotating set of paintings. They have their own gallery and the work shows his arc.
By the Whitsell there is a new very large LED screen for digital works. Now is a very surreal maximalist fantasy a la Bosch. Several galleries mix eras in a theme, like the Seattle Asian did, very different from the previous Mark building chronologiclal layout. They have on loan a video installation by Swiss artst Pipilotti Rist. Some favorites are in storage for now and the currators will continue rearranging the collection.
The Rothko Pavilian is all windows, so it has light-proof sculptures, and innumerable couches and chairs. It would be a great place for a date-day, and the galleries throughout have ample seating. The pavilion has some outdoor patios, facing East and West, There is also a cafe which, with its own entrance, no ticket needed, and both indoor and outdoor seating.
First Thursday free days are on break, so now would be a great time to join the museum and make it your own. They have a sale on membership 15% off, one year, 30% off two years.
Full details https://portlandartmuseum.org/event/grand-opening-free-days/. At the Portland Art Museum www.pam.org 1219 SW Park. 1PM-9 Thursday, 10-5 Friday and Saturday Free with advance tickets

November 20 Fickle Economies
Sahar Al-Sawaf https://www.salsawaffles.com/ and Emma Piper-Burket https://emmapiperburket.com/ bring their movie Did You Forget About Iraq? The movie "calls attention to the fickle economies of the US news cycle to offer personal counter-narratives of Iraq through a collection of experimental nonfiction works."
Iraq was designated by President Bush II as an "Axis of Evil" country. The invasion was justified on the basis that it it "would pay for itself" by seizing the oil reserves. That little misadventure cost $2-3 billion, contributed between 10-30% of the national debt, and lost about half a million lives.
At the Boathouse Microcinema www.boathousemicrocinema.com 822 N River Doors 7:30PM show 8 Free

November 15 Uncertainty
Uncertainty Surrounds the Holding of Things is a group show of 16 artists. Curators Olivia Miller and Bella Feinstein from NYC and LA. Normally a gallery would list the names of the artists in plaintext, maybe even the names of the pieces, artist location, and bio. Maybe it is all a conceptual performance of uncertainty?

November 8 Electric Zine Post Shangra Night Flame
Mono Space has a listening session today. "In the wake of the recent passing of D’Angelo (1974–2025), Mono Space will present a day-long tribute to the beloved artist by featuring the four magnificent albums that he gave to the world (Brown Sugar, Live at the Jazz Cafe, Voodoo, and Black Messiah). This special Gallery Hours curation will also include his notable collaborations, remixes, and rarities.
Throughout the day, we will also share some of the music of his contemporaries, particularly the other classic recordings that were created alongside Voodoo at Electric Lady Studios during the legendary sessions led by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and featuring the music collective that became known as The Soulquarians." A long time ago I had a private tour of Electric Lady Studios.

Here is the ambitious plan: "In Planning, Raphael Arar extends his research-based art practice into the terrain of collective decision-making. The exhibition moves between earnest proposals and playful provocations, between technical schemas and poetic operations. Each piece navigates the design challenges of organizing ourselves differently, treating economic coordination as both practical problem and aesthetic proposition. The works assemble fragments of other possibilities, leaving open the question of what democratic economic planning might look like."

October 18 - 24 Ai Weiwei Presents Cockroaches
Ai Weiwei is an artist focused on exposing human wrongs.
His father and grandfather were both favored and crushed by the Chinese government. Weiwei lived in poor conditions as a child for that. In 1981 in the first wave of Chinese international students, he came to New York City at age 24. He photographed Wigstock and police response to the early AIDS protests in New York. That experience sparked his art life of fighting injustice. 1989 and the Democracy Movement was yet to come.
Ai Weiwei exhibited photographs Dropping the Urn in Portland at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in 2010.
Later he really got in trouble. Privatization and corruption resulted in rapid building throughout China. The result was "tofu construction" with poor quality concrete and inadequate rebar. The Sichuan earthquake of 2008 caused them to crumble. Tofu construction killed about 90,000. The government never even counted them. Weiwei organized volunteers to go door to door to record the names, many were children. He later collected rebar from the buildings, straightened it, and displayed it alongside the names. As a result he was disappeared in 2011 by the Chinese government for 81 days.
A strong documentary by Alison Klayman in 2012, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, tells the artist's story to that point. Klayman generously visited the Portland Art Museum to screen the film. She subsequently made a fly on the wall documentary about Steve Bannon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TvFouKz6j0
Since, Weiwei has taken on many injustices, including the refugee migrations in Europe. Republican neocons, President Bush II, and John Bolton developed the idea of the Axis of Evil. Some were selected for war, including Iraq, Syria, and Libya. The list expands and contracts. Families naturally fled and flooded Europe. That changed, and continues to change governments. Irish artist Richard Mosse has also engaged the subject.
Since the revolution, China seems to have a desire for manifest destiny. Sound familiar? That included Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and soon Taiwan. Filmmaker Deborah Stratman captured the story of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang in film Kings of the Sky. Weiwei brings the story of Hong Kong democracy protests in film Cockroach.

Weiwei is making stream free for a few days. Click through at https://arte.bio/ai-weiwei/b/34Bh1L2.
His autobiography 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows: A Memoir in 2021 is a fascinating read, and he has a new book On Censorship coming in January.
In my opinion, the United States should have encouraged Hong Kong immigration to the US, but this was 2020. Ditto Taiwan in the near future, but this is 2025.

Law and culture are sticky wickets. The Dakota Access Pipeline met culture in people camping and demonstrating against it.
(Long)
Humans are thought by science to have emerged about 200-300 thousand years ago in Africa.
They migrated to fill the earth, arriving in North America about 20 thousand years ago. They came to the Dakotas about 13 thousand years ago.
It is thought that the Vikings came to North America about a thousand years ago. Columbus came in about 1492, about 500 years ago with a proclamation in Spanish that any who did not convert to Christianity could be justifiably killed.
English settlers to the Eastern US brought law. It was based on the Magna Carta and English common law, then the US Constitution about 238 years ago.
The native Cherokees developed a written language and written law insnpired by the settlers. Their existance was outlawed by the state, then Native soveignity was upheld in the Supreme Court case Worchester vs Georgia.
President Andrew Jackson, Indian fighter, was reported to say, "the supreme court has made their decision, let them enforce it," the decision, about 190 years ago. Then he proceeded to remove the native peoples in the Trail of Tears.
The 10th Amendment to the US Constitution reserves law to the states unless by act of Congress.
Congressional energy acts moved policy to the federal government. Water law is largely state by state. Natural gas pipelines have much federal authority, ironically because of natural gas deregulation from the late 1970s into the 1980s. Oil pipelines are on their own with the states along with electricty transmission lines.
Meanwhile there is legislation and case law on the rights of tribes. I always respect the great native poet and musician John Trudell. I think 1974 Boldt over reached. And I believe tribes, whose interests will be destroyed by climate change, are faulty opposing clean energy, for example, opposing the Goldendale storage project. Indian strategy needs the next generation.
The Standing Rock protest for the Dakota Access Pipeline has many points of law and commen sense culture any can research. It is the subject of this art show.

September 20 Aquatic Life
Sasha Fishman https://sashafishman.com/, from New York City, has been artist in residence at ILY2 West. Her sculptures are themed on marine biology and sometimes involve pumps and water in the gallery. Strong vectors of her work are her own experimental materials made from the mud of hot springs, sea life, mycelium, and more.
Her show here, Shad Mode, is her readout of studying NW river life, including, salmon, sturgeon and lamprey eels.
"The show is a continuation of her interest in biomaterials, toxicology, and energy harvesting as points for critical analysis and mechanisms for sculpting. Driven by a fascination bordering on fixation with fish as both subject and object, Fishman’s practice prods the relationship between fish, their ecosystem, and their caretakers, asking the question: How do humans direct the evolution of a species, and how does a species exist beyond itself?

September 19-21 Movies of Movement
One of Portland's annual (modern) dance film festivals is back. It has three nights of programs explained on their website. The work originates in 14 countries.
Dance is a tough art form. It requires continuous training, a good floor, and a room that is not too cold or hot, no matter what the weather outside. It is real time, rarely stored, and dependent on audience support. It is not a Marvel film in the age of infinite reproduction.
The films are not documentation of a stage performance, they are a story told in dance. The works are each about 3 to 15 minutes in length.
You can see the https://portlanddancefilmfest.com/ at the Portland Art Museum Tomorrow Theater 3530 SE Division Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 7PM $15 each night

September 12 Outsider Naturalists
Nucleus brings a two person show of illustration work by Teagan White and Nicole Duennebier.
Illustration is a popular vector is Portland art, maybe we have nature's inspiration, long rainy hours and the patiencce for it. Nucleus wins a copywriting award for this desciption.
""Teagan White is an artist and outsider naturalist whose work arises from direct experience with natural phenomena and dedicated communication with the land. Through careful observation and poetic allegory, their paintings explore regional ecological issues such as drought, wildfire, habitat fragmentation, and biodiversity loss, as well as the universal spiritual and psychosomatic burden of our acquiescence to a necrotic, extractivist civilization.
Bleak only at surface level, their work is saturated with the conviction that other, stranger, and more beautiful ways of engaging with the world are not only possible but limitless, and that solutions won’t be found through exclusionary conservation, technocratic fantasies, or neocolonial exploitation, but through a return to devoted kinship with all beings.""
Nicole Duennebier hails all the way from Boston and is inspired by her time in Maine and its relationship with the sea.

August 23 Talent of Writing
Society is the public space of a group of artist studios above Mother Foucalt's Bookstore.
Christian Alborz Oldham, all the way from Berlin, brings Having No Talent is Not Enough. He was art-schooled in the NW. He will visit in person in November.
Society has writers in the house and they wrote this.
"Having no talent is not enough is a concise edit of works in print, sculpture, painting, and publication, including Moon High School, a new 200,000-word florilegium published by SOCIETY on the occasion of the exhibition.
Each of these works is a double: bootleg, replication, edition, pair. Some are artifacts of research of a connoisseurial nature that additionally attends to the historical. One is reminded of another thread of Oldham’s work that traced the trans-Pacific reciprocal flow of historical cultural influence through the works of an avant-garde fashion designer. But there are also here images of that category of casual observational or representational catch-and-release that one once found on tumblr and are now a social media commonplace.
It’s not the questions of authorship, appropriation, fabrication, replication raised by these works that preoccupy us. These questions have been well and properly wrung out after a century of their exercise in modern and contemporary art practices and discourses although taken together they do say something about the practice of contemporary art in 2025. Rather, SOCIETY is interested in the social dimensions of Oldham’s works to include reception and its delays, assertions of a genealogy, the auto-production of discourse, modes and means of circulation of image and text through which social forms may be constructed.
SOCIETY posits additionally that attention to these vertical and horizontal temporal axes is the underpainting, as it were, of art history, taking up the question Seth Siegelaub posed in 2011 through a poster edition recently made again by Oldham in their exhibition at Kunstverein München: 'How is Art History Made?'
Christian Alborz Oldham’s practice presents a ludic approach to the politics surrounding production, re-production, and reception with a particular interest in garments and textiles, technology, copy, transaction, and economics. These concepts are explored in a dedicated practice of ikebana, an art form resistant to permanent exhibition, sale, and preservation. Oldham holds an MFA from University of Washington, a BA in Art History and MBA from Willamette University, and has certification as a freestyle sensei from the Ryusei school of ikebana."

August 9 Really Can't Title This
The US West Coast has many Japanese communities. Seattle does. Nihonmachi Alley in the ID has artworks referencing that history. Sadly in the news of hate for destruction lately. Today dancer Kaoru Okumura http://kaoruokumura.com/ performs. Her mode is Butoh, a modern Japanese dance form, often super slow. It's notable on the 80th anniversary of the Nagasaki bomb.

Your big thing may be backyard gallery show What Happens Before You Die? Not because of the title or existentialism. Because it is a backyard gallery with good curation and a fine community!
Sommer Browning and Carin Rodenborn, making it, are both visual artist-writers.

The big Nucleus has a solo and a group. Josh Stover, all the way from Richmond, Virgina is solo. Ori is an indivudalistc black focus gallery in a small vintage house built in 1903. It remains on Mississippi Avenue. African Americans migrated to Portland for the Kaiser shipyards of WW2. Many workers lived in Vanport in the area of the Portland Raceway today. It was wiped out in the Flood of 1948. Subsequently many flood control dams on the Columbia-Snake were built which produce carbon-free energy. Some people want to tear them down so they can have the privilege of rafting the rivers. Portland African Americans then relocated within Red Line neighborhoods, including Mississippi and Alberta displacing Germans, who moved to Parkrose and Argay Terrace.
Ori has traced its own path in its small community; many art shows open by appointment. I think I can announce this without blowing it out and glad to remove it at their request.
Oregon has a strong bill of rights in its constitution. One of the strongest among states, and stronger than the US Constitution. The courts in Henry and Nyssa affirmed exotic dancing as free expression. In the 1990s dancer-activists Dulce and Mona Superhero created Danzine. Dulce went on to do noted AIDS work, worldwide. Portland artist Marne Lucas organized dancer art shows. PICA did sex worker art shows including a large retrospective.
Now Ori in collaboration with the Oregon Safer Workers Coalition, brings show The Oldest Profession. Look up Mary Magdalene. This show is not the first in the world or Portland on the topic.
Show at 4PM-9 under 18 must be accompanied by parents. Free
I'm very selective in my interest in lowbrow and pop surrealsim. I would not have it in my home. I viewed La Luz de Jesus Gallery from the begining. I rarely list the genre here. That said, Brassworks sells and packs out openings. They have one at 5.

Grizzly Grizzly https://www.grizzlygrizzly.com/ is an artist collective in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Which is weird, because there are no grizzly bears in Philadelphia. Oregon used to have them, but we killed the last one in 1937. They ranged all the way through California which has one on their flag. Even Mexico. https://www.mtpr.org/montana-news/2021-04-02/timeline-a-history-of-grizzly-bear-recovery-in-the-lower-48-states Our cililized neighbor to the North, Canada, has them, Alaska, and a few other Rocky spots.
Grizzly Grizzly has been running an exchange with the After | Time Collective here. Tonight is -voir | ver-, title referencing French, by unnamed artists from Grizzly Grizzly. If the gallery wants to keep the names of the artists secret, or not in plain text, that is their business.
