August 10 Geek Desire Jasmine Carnival
Blowin’ through the jasmine in my mind are paintings by Shelley Turley.
At Helen's Costume https://www.costumeintl.com/ 7706 SE Yamhill Street Opening today. 2PM-5 Free
Carnival Fabulon is a show of paintings inspired by the late Portland author Katherine Dunn's novel Geek Love about a fictional carnival freek show family of old. I'm not a fan of lowbrow/pop-surrealism but you can get your dose at Brassworks Gallery, 3022 NE Glisan 5PM-9 Free
Italians Do it Better is the label of Mike Simonetti and Johnny Jewel. Jewel's synth stylings have accompanied a series of female singers, the core of the label. The first, pre-the label, was Ida No and 90's group Glass Candy. Ruth Radelet nee of the Chromatics recently performed here.
Tonight an incarnation, Desire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40JPgUvS_6M, plays, with film Drive. It's a stylish violent neo-noir film about a getaway driver set in Los Angeles. It is a noted cult film. Initially it was scored by Jewel, then rescored leaving one Desire and one Chromatics track. Some of Jewel's soundtrack became Themes for an Imaginary Film - https://soundcloud.com/johnnyjewel/symmetry-themes-for-an. Tonight Desire performs accompanied by their selection of films, answers questions, then Drive will be screened in its entirety. Desire and Drive https://hollywoodtheatre.org/show/drive-desire-johnny-jewel/ at Hollywood Theater 4122 NE Sandy 8:30PM $20 Of course sold out
