The Xhurch is for sale. This year the Xhurch NTVTY is at the mall.

This year is NTVTY XI, the first was 2010. The format this year is a sculpture garden and votive shrine with artist collaborators. Many of the set pieces are nativity scenes with computers or technology as the baby messiah.

Xhurch and NTVTY have set up at the Mall. Find it "in the former Lady Foot Locker, second level, above Zumiez and Hot Topic," by Animal.Plant.Mineral.

In past years there have been musical collaborators.

Check their socials for hours ongoing, more interactive art, and more experimental music into the new year.

December 14 Neuroscience and Dance

I'm analytical so I need things to balance life in direct experience which resists analysis. I fell into the Portland modern dance crowd early. Modern dance girlfriend and all. After a few years, it lost its newness to me.

Then I discovered butoh through Sankai Juku and a Montreal performer with Zoviet France.

That Montreal performer combined butoh, Hindu temple dance and Hawaiian dance in her own style. It was a big impact on me. I had to speak to her and did. Her first language was French, and I have no French. But backstage she told this story I relate as shorthand for the koan that is butoh. Her teacher had this image. Imagine your body as only its bones. The bones are made of glass. In each joint is a flower. Improvise on that.

To Sankai Juku, unbeknownst to me, a friend was the producer of Sankai Juku in Pioneer Square, Seattle. My exposure to Sankai Juku was the second in their comeback post-Pioneer Square. At the end of the performance I felt an imediate visceral response across my scalp of chills and sparks; the entire audience was up in a standing ovation. It was not the usual few and checking to see if you should join the ovation. There was a collective rise by everyone. Somehow Pioneer Square was subliminally encoded in their performance. I did not even know that story at the time.

I always try to see Sankai Juku in Seattle because the audience has a strong emotional relationship. You feel it in the audience. I went on to study butoh in the flesh in Seattle, Japan, Portland, and San Francisco and see performances in each adding NYC and Denver.

Vangeline https://www.vangeline.com/ is a French butoh player in NYC. She has written a book on feminism, neuroscience https://www.vangeline.com/research, and butoh. It is a good read and complement to my discussion with Kazuo Ohno in Kyoto.

He said that the male originators were so engrossed in creation, they could not comprehend how women performers would bring their body experience to it. They were discovering butoh in their own male bodies.

Women did and do, ongoing. Many of us know trans persons who will bring their own to movement.

Even in the early days women such as Nakajima Natsu who works with intellectually disabled performers today; Yoko Ashikawa who brought a warm tone to butoh - she suggested an image our senile grandmother; Hiroko Tamano, who brings the darkest images to cute; Eiko Otake from NYC, who had a live-work in the World Trace Center and made free commemorative performance from that - she also suggests, with family, teach them to pretend to be sleeping to get them to sleep, then in butoh, dance as if you are asleep; Yumiko Yoshioka bringing butoh to a castle in Japan. I've studied with each. There are many American and international women in butoh. The Tamano legendary sushi restaurant, I patronzed in the Mission, and their home, was creative cradle to many female butoh friends.

One of my favorates, Dairakudakan is half women performers. I will travel to see them, have done, and have taken a workshop with Maro which challened me. I was also Portland host to Akira Kasai.

For whatever reason, Portland dance producers have been allergic to butoh. Bringing a group from Japan is expensive, but Seattle, SF, LA, Denver, NYC, and Vancouver BC do it.

Today Vangeline gives a free Internet talk - "Where the arts meet neuroscience - A virtual expert talk with Prof. Dr. Judith Revers and artist Vangeline."

"What happens inside our bodies and minds while performing and participating in the arts, and what are the mental and psychological benefits of it? In this last virtual lecture of the year, Prof. Dr. Judith Revers, Medical School Hamburg, dives into the field of performance art and dance with New York-based artist Vangeline, who’s involved in artistic research with neuroscientific methods around the Japanese artform Butoh. Together, they will be investigating interdisciplinary research in Arts and Neurosciences and its implications for the Arts Therapies."

"The Slowest Wave/Butoh and The Brain is an art-science performance-research study. This new study investigates the brain dynamics of dancers while they are performing Butoh, a postmodern dance style that originated in Japan, through the use of electroencephalography (EEG) to record the participants’ brain waves. The study is a collaboration between the New York-based Vangeline Theater dance company, the Laboratory for Noninvasive Brain-Machine Interface Systems, IUCRC BRAIN Center, The Rockefeller University, and the Neurobiology of Social Communication Lab (funded by the City University of New York, Rockefeller University and New York University). In collaboration with neuroscientists Sadye Paez and Constantina Theofanopoulou, neuro engineer Jose ‘Pepe’ Contreras-Vidal, and composer Ray Sweeten, Vangeline choreographed a 60-minute ensemble butoh piece, which is uniquely informed by the protocol established for a scientific pilot study researching the impact of butoh on brain activity. For the groundbreaking art-science study, dancers' brain activity will be recorded at the University of Houston, Texas, with real-time visualization by multimedia artist Badie Khaleghian of the dancers' neural activity. Results will then be disseminated in scientific journals.

Vangeline and Sweeten have built on a 20-year history of creative collaboration with a soundscape that is informed by techniques of brainwave entrainment (techniques that affect consciousness through sound). The Slowest Wave investigates through the use of scalp EEG how brain waves during butoh dancing compare to those emitted during other conscious or unconscious motor behaviors, such as speaking or meditating. Moreover, the study will elucidate the functional neural networks of the dancers and the neural synchrony within and between them. This project is meant to foster connections and understanding between dancers, artists, scientists, engineers, and audiences from around the world."

Butoh is not for everyone to like. The Blackwood Productions documentary Butoh: Body on the Edge of Crisis is an accessible introduction. Portland's Mizu at Headwaters theater is retiring. Seattle's Daipan Butoh has events several times a year.

Ralph Pugay has new paintings, The Longest Journey, opening today.

They definitely wins the copywriting award of the day: "From vampires pumping iron to ravers being airlifted to safety by helicopters, to a group of meditators battling each other at a meditation competition, Pugay paints his errant thoughts and draws his non-linear narratives to extreme ends. The title of the exhibition, The Longest Journey, is a metaphor for self-discovery and has been referenced in literature and in movies, as well as in a video game from the late 1990s where the protagonist maneuvers between realities. In this exhibition, Pugay considers the tropic quality of the phrase with its range of meaning and use—something that, for Pugay, is critical to understanding the interplay between the flow of information and human perception as he considers the effects of the external world and its technologies on our internal world, our daydreams, and our relationships.

Pugay’s painted propositions are the result of the artist’s careful study of the human condition—particularly religion, specifically Catholicism, and history; his curiosity with contemporary culture as filtered through TikTok and other social media; and his critical engagement with ideas of class, race, gender and queer culture. The resulting works are characterized by bright colors, playful compositions, and patterning. Our popular trends, viral news stories, consumer fads, and all other manner of social phenomena are poignantly examined with great clarity and humor, locating the moments of tension in the collective unconscious."

November 19 Sampling the Style of a Continent

Africa is a continent, not a country. Within there are over three thousand ethnicities. Whenever you see straight line on a map, it's a mistake. That doesn't even take into account nomadic people.

America ammuses itself to death in its own media bubble. African countries have journalists and observers of the local culture; our media deems them unreliable or uninteresting; so we see and hear little. Even if we had that, you have to put your feet on the ground, open your eyes and ears, smell the smells, and feel the weather. Listen and ask open-ended questions. Listen to people's dreams.

One outstanding example of Portlanders doing the work is Chris Kirkley, DJ Sahel Sounds. He has traveled that region collecting music people carry on their feature phones. He did a great show collecting posters on the Azawad independence movement people make in the graphics editors on those phones for the Portland Museum of Modern Art. He did a remake of the Film Purple Rain with local actors and musicians. See it, you can find it in the African Films collection at PCC Cascade.

The Portland Art Museum has done a good job the last few years updating its mojo. An example is a new show sampling African Fashion.

The curator gives a talk this afternoon. She is Christine Checinska, joining us from the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK. Details are https://portlandartmuseum.org/event/making-africa-fashion/. You can reserve a ticket from that link that includes museum admission to see the show. At the Portland Art Museum in the Masonic Temple Building ballroom 1219 SW Park 2PM-3:30

October 26 Landscape

Painter Lisa Yuskavage speaks with Jarrett Earnest and Christian Viveros-Fauné as part of the Converge 45 project. Earnest and Yuskavage curated the paintings of Jesse Murry (1948–1993) at the Cooley Gallery now. He is an abstract landscape painter and writer. Yuskavage was one of the artists curated by Linda Ferris into the Seattle Contemporary Art Project, now in the Seattle Art Museum collection. Portland Art Museum is behind with only 2 works on paper. In the 1980s, some of the art world rebelled against the Reagan Wall Street inorganic art boom by bringing outsider art into the American gallery and museum world. In that movement, Murry wrote a seminal essay on artist Howard Finster and curated his work for a show at the New Museum. https://d2b8urneelikat.cloudfront.net/media/collectiveaccess/images/6/3/59637_ca_object_representations_media_6333_original.pdf

October 21 Harvest Lone Vampire Meta Mural Psych Water

Cemetaries hold stories for time. Portland's Lone Fir Cemetary holds many families streets were named after. Block 14 is a city block size part of Lone Fir with the saddest history.

It held unnamed graves of people who died at the Hawthorne Hospital, predecessor to the State Hospital. It's debatable which is sadder, the buried there or the unclaimed remains left at the State Hospital in the library of dust. https://davidmaisel.com/works/library-of-dust/ It also holds the sad story of Chinese laborers. Solo men who did not fit into the mercantile class of the last dynasty journeyed East to work in the West in mines, building railroads, farming, and in professions like laundry. When they passed, they were buried in Lone Fir. Filmmaker Ivy Lin documented attempts to return the remains to families in China post facto in Come Together Home https://vimeo.com/6226018. Proper burial is important in Chinese culture and this was not that.

At a point Multnomah County disinterred some of Block 14's remains and built a maintenance building over it. As the building decayed, the county planned to auction the land for apartments. Now it is the "empty" section of the cemetary. There have been several artist residencies including Micki Skudlarczyk's cast sugar boats referencing the Chinese remains traveling back home.

A memorial and contemplative garden is being designed for Block 14. Your participation is welcome in person https://www.oregonmetro.gov/events/information-session-cultural-heritage-and-healing-garden-lone-fir-cemetery/2023-10-21 11AM-1 Free

Many know the name Museum Art School, that changed to Pacific Northwest College of Art after a divorce. After a marriage it is now PNCA | Willamette - https://pnca.willamette.edu/. The Hallie Ford Museum at the Willamette Salem campus opens a 25 year retrospective of regional artists which is recommended.

The Oregon Alliance for the National Museum of Women in the Arts - https://nmwa.org/ is launching four lectures, Women and Art in the 20th Century.

First is Prudence Roberts, noted local curator, formerly senior curator at the Portland Art Museum, consultant to marque collectors and a professor.

Her topic is We Will Go Right Up to the Sun: Sonia Delaunay’s Multifaceted Career. Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) was born in Odessa, Ukraine and lived in France as an artist. She was the first living female artist with a retrospective in the Louvre in 1964. Delaunay was part of the "avant-garde circles in the early 20th century" and recieved the French Legion of Honor at age 95. Delaunay participated in the Orphist movement influenced by French avant writers and forming a bridge between Cubism and Abstract Expresionism.

September 9 Rewind

Rewind is a show of clothing art by Martha Daghlian and Jen LaMastra.

""History is slippery like satin. We wear stories of the past like a uniform, a costume, a suit of armor, or a disguise. Timelines unravel and are stitched together as memory or custom dictates.

LaMastra’s meticulously constructed garments are as playful as they are assertive, evoking the lineage of feminist art and pop cultural artifacts, in alignment with her ongoing practice of political “craftivism.”

In Daghlian’s haphazardly sewn pieces, European archetypes like the fool and the scholar are reanimated before a backdrop of patchworked historical imagery, encouraging a poetic disassembly of the past.

Both artists take unique approaches to transform soft and discarded materials into adornments for acts of resilience, resistance, and reimagination.""

August 24 - Social Forms

Converge45 is a successor to PICA as PICA was successor to Art on the Edge. It mixes local and international with an out-of-town currator.

It spans venues. It opens this weekend. The component exhibitions start closing in October and persist through December. Almost all of it is free.

It is more efficient to refer you to the Converge45 website and socials than to catalog it here. I doubt anyone would be disappointed by any of the program. Personally I'm excited about Richard Mosse's work.

Rigmarole Elizabeth Arzani, Ahuva Zaslavsk opens.

"Pipes deliver and receive as conductors; they flow all sorts of materials to both of their ends. But what happens when the pipe clogs?

In this exhibition, Portland based artists Elizabeth Arzani and ahuva s. zaslavsky meet in a rambling garden to conduct a dialogue about the concept of ends and the spaces in between, discussing the role of pipes and tubes as mechanisms for transporting materials and connecting contrasting spaces.

The tunnels connect the functional and metaphorical: the inside and outside, the pleasant and repulsive and the vulgar and refined. These unseen intermediate spaces act as mediators between senders and recipients but can also cause disruptions and misunderstandings, similar to language and communication channels.

The audience is encouraged to wander through the forking paths of the garden, engaging in a dialogue about the visible and hidden, artificial and natural elements, in order to untie dysfunctional knots and foster new connection. "

July 29-30 Lumber Rose

Photographer Justine Kurland is a strong protagonist in the Yale School.

Gregory Crewdson was a Yale photography grad who returned to teach. He gracfully narrated his arc in an art talk arranged by Matthew Stadler in collaboration with Stephanie Snyder and the late Ripe Family dinner. From that talk, you can understand the Yale School of observation and fiction. Crewdson has continued to build elaborate sets and scenes as would a movie, making momentary images suggesting a narrative before and after that time zero.

Crewdson, with collaboration by Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, famously promoted some students in the Another Girl Another Planet show in 1999. In that show, Kurland launched her narrative of women in landscape. We all know the Mark Twain story of Tom Sawyer and Huckeberry Fin, young vagabonds living freely and having adventures. What if women did the same with no fear?

Kurland was part of the late Linda Ferris' Seattle Contemporary Art Project. Kurland has shown in Portland galleries, most recently the Elizabeth Leach Gallery. She collaborated with Jon Raymond on a small book Old Joy in 2004 and was guested by old PICA in 2005. In the pandemic, she created a new body of work, SCRUM Manifesto, sutting up photo books in her personal collection. It's a peowerful observation worth reader's look. Today she generously has curated a show, The Rose, with the Lumber Room.

"The Rose considers collage as a subversive action and a feminist strategy. The title borrows its name from Jay DeFeo’s seminal painting and refers to her iterative practice, where one thing turns into something else, gathering rotational gravity as it orbits."

The artists include Ruth Asawa, Natalie Ball, Lee Bontecou, Vija Celmins, Philo Cohen, Jay DeFeo, Mary Beth Edelson, Tatiana Florival, Vanessa German, Bean Gilsdorf, Janice Guy, K8 Hardy, Leslie Hewitt, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, AK Jenkins, Baseera Khan, Kiki Kogelnik, Tarrah Krajnek, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Jacky Marshall, Aspen Mays, Qiana Mestrich, Helina Metaferia, Shala Miller, Joiri Minaya, Rachelle Mozman-Solano, Wangechi Mutu, Yamini Nayar, B. Ingrid Olson, Frida Orupabo, Gina Osterloh, Olivia Reavy, Deborah Roberts, Martha Naranjo Sandoval, Sally Saul, Keisha Scarville, Gwen Smith, Pamela Sneed, Lorna Simpson, Lau Wai, Della Wells, Hannah Wilke, and Francesca Woodman. Strongly recommended.

Sunday Kurland speaks with artist Keisha Scarville and gallery director of Higher Pictures https://higherpictures.com/ Kim Bourus. Higher Pictures, operating since 2007, is now in Brooklyn.

They are friends in the art world and real life with a strong perspective on photography now.

Seating is limited. The event will be recorded and available for viewing on the Lumber Room website in due time.

Talk at 2 Sunday. Opening Saturday 4-7.

July 27-30 Seattle Art Fair

Seattle has more money so it has more art. They are far down on the great art chain of being. But they have their own art fair child of the Allen family.

Seattle galleries, some Portland ones, and a few national/international galleries present. It is privatey curated by the individual for-profit galleries, unlike a nonprofit group show.

Portland galleries Atler, PDX Contemporary, Russo-Lee are there. Portland artist Sharita Towne has an offsite event. Forest For the Trees has a residency in Seattle so they are hosting an after party. Converge 45 is hosting an event. That and more is at https://seattleartfair.com/2023-around-town/.

Many of our Portland projects offer free passes on request. If you want to experience a commercial art fair, this is probably the closest. It's about a quarter mile walk from Amtrak.

July 23 Tomorrowland Yesterday

Nam June Paik, 1932-2006, is a revolutionary gentleman of the neo-Dada Fluxus and a world citizen of Seoul, Tokyo, many cities in Germany, New York, and Miami. He studied 20th Century music, and applied that aesthetic to video as art.

He remixed content, circuit bent the box, built sculptures of TVs, incorporated television into performance, and built TV art robots. He was in the downtown art crowd of the 1960s; influenced, influencer, and collaborator.

Paik's Robot K-456 participated in many performances. https://cyberneticzoo.com/robots-in-art/1964-robot-k-456-nam-june-paik-korean-shuya-abe-japanese/

Based on the Intergalactic Network idea of J.C.R. Licklider in 1962, the concept of the Internet emerged. Portlander Ivan Sutherland, seminal in computer graphics, was in that mix at MIT. Sutherland was advisor to Alan Kay, originator of the Dynabook concept we use today. In 1969, the first 3-location Internet was completed by a small team; a friend of mine made the hardware. Contemporaneouly, Gene Youngblood's Expanded Cinema, published in 1970, included Paik as an influence. In turn, Youngblood's ideas were an influence on thinking of the Internet, pre-its scale-out, as a cultural and artistic, medium and force. If you can find it, Youngblood's Mass Media and the Future of Desire, 1977, is a read on the topic. That essay mentions a book, never completed, in collaboration with Maturana and Varela who incluenced Flores. Flores collaborated with Winnograd, AI pioneer. Winnograd was the faculty advisor of Larry Page. As a coda, Paik is credited with coining the phrase "electronic superhighway."

Unfortunately post-his death, a split developed between the estate and Paik's gallery, the Carl Solway Gallery. Fortunately his works have been cradled by museums, he has been the subject of many retrospectives, and has been reprised in documentaries.

A new one, 2023, is Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV .

It is in the collection of Movie Madness and the Hillsboro Library. It's on the big screen tonight too https://hollywoodtheatre.org/tickets/21795/ at Hollywood Theater 7:30PM unfortunately Sold Out

June 10 Predux

This is a preview for Richard Mosse's Broken Spectre. It is a continuation of his connection to Portland.

Mosse presented Enclave in the 2013 Venice Biennale. PAM Director Ferriso brought it soon after for an installation at the museum. A first for the artist. It tells part of the story of the war of warlords terrorizing Eastern Congo. It is a continuation of the Rwandan war of 1994. I was in Eastern Congo in about July 1994.

The Congo warlords are fueled by primitive mining including tantalum. The tantalum is smuggled to China where it is made into an electronic component, a tantalum capacitor. They are an electrical shock absorber to make the bit signals electronic systems actually work. Every electonic device uses large numbers of them.

Mosse is a product of the Yale School. Many graduates of that program do great work in the Arbus gaze. Mosse puts Yale's documentary approach to much more potent use.

Mosse is now engaged with the Converge 45, presenting art this Summer. Converge 45 was a response to the decline of PICA. PICA was a response to disinterest by the Portland Art Museim in Art on the Edge.

As a preview, the NYT talks Broken Spectre. There are many articles and videos on the project you can find. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/08/arts/design/richard-mosse-film-amazon-brazil.html

Brazil also has a mining problem, leading to a violence problem, and a pollution problem as outside miners use cyanide to separate gold from mud. The cyanide is, of course, poured in the river.

Mosse is articulate, passionate, and humble. Don't miss his work.
