"Last year I had a dream. We were at my grandparents’ house and my late sister was standing there, looking at me. I carefully approached her and she whispered to me: “Soñé que revelabas”. I woke up trying to make sense of that sentence.

Revelar in Spanish is both to manifest or make public something that was a secret or unknown, and the chemical process in photography by which a latent image becomes visible.

She was my oldest sister, my best friend and confidant and had a gift to make me feel like things were going to work out. I wrote the sentence on a piece of paper and put it up on my studio wall. I saw it every day, and kept trying to figure out what she meant. As the days and the months went by, I realised that I am still trying to make sense of her loss. Loss not only as a consequence of death but loss in the quotidian. Loss of language, interactions, moments, and memories that become fainter as a result of distance and time. Leaving one’s home, family, and language and starting another life in a different country carries a weight that becomes most apparent during difficult times. I started looking through family pictures (my family and other families), using them as probes, copying them, changing them, creating new ones. I attached my own memories onto film.

This body of work is a personal account of the process of translation, not just in language, but of sounds, inflections, the stories, the memories, the dreams, and ultimately the way I see. The feeling of being unmoored. The estrangement that comes with the inability to fully translate from one language to the other. How does one communicate without full authority? How to experience in one’s language and express the memory in a different, foreign language. It is a reflection of ongoing investigations on translating my experiences from my native by language to my adopted one, back and forth in order to reconcile being in two different worlds with different structures; an attempt to create a personal visual language that can encompass both. A way to reveal myself."

"Working between wood, masking paper, and organic and synthetic materials to carve, paint, and weave these pieces, the material distinctions between surface and support begin to collapse. Cambium, the exhibition’s title, refers to the thin living layer of undifferentiated cells in vascular plants where new growth is generated. “Undifferentiated” is the operative word here—it means the cells have not yet specialized, they retain the capacity for multiple possibilities.

Faria is interested in cambium as a hidden generative structure. The cambium is a place of potential, of response and formation. The recurring use of adjacent panels or paired planes in these new paintings reflect the artists interest in relationship rather than division. The two surfaces are distinct entities, they do not resolve into a single unified object. They remain separate while influencing one another. Boundaries and edges are porous sites of communication, contact/touch, exchange, negotiation, differentiation. Carved works such as “Osmosis” or “Event” share these qualities as alternating layers of rust and shellac or acrylic, rayon, and adhesive compound (respectively) build upon one another atop the birch substrate.

As in trees, some cells in the cambium layer maintain themselves, while others become xylem (wood) or phloem (inner bark). They exist between states of stability and emergence, suggesting that what appears stable or complete is always being shaped by invisible processes underneath. This also connects to the artists ongoing interest in the support as an active participant in forming what we perceive. Large-scale sculptures constructed of masking paper further inform this thinking by recasting a utilitarian material into organic forms. The focused “Support Studies 1-5” of the same medium explore different stages of the intricate, additive and reductive processes. A barrier typically meant to simply protect a surface here becomes all-inclusive: shape, support, and surface. Compositional balance is reached quietly through these networks of exchange and feedback between Faria, the works, and their environment. A piece is finished when it has a sort of unnameable quality, when Faria senses it has a life, a complexity, and some kind of equilibrium to it that can speak for itself."

At age 15 Sadie Benning revieved the gift of a camera from her father James Benning, a noted experimental filmmaker.

With the Fisher Price PXL-2000, the Pixelvision, she made movies about her queer experience. The 1989 camera records lo-fi black and white video on audio cassettes.

Benning was acknowledged at a young age my the movie and art world. Later she founded Le Tigre.

For your +1. Ai Weiwei is a Chinese artist many readers know. His latest book is On Censorship. After 250 years, yes, we have it here. We also have corruption here, it's not just for "African dictators."

He is famous for many works, including an early social practice work Fairytale in 2007. Between 2008 and 2011, and continuing, he made art about deaths in the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan. About 5000 students perished because of corrupt "tofu construction" - public schools built at minimum cost for maximum profit.

The number of deaths and names were deemed a state secret. The artist's sin was going door to door to gather the names from families, almost all single children, and writing them down. The power of names in China is a cultural thing, the gravity of which is not understood in the West.

As a result, in 2011 he was disappeared for 81 days.

I am a student of democracy and have worked professionally in the field. I have studied the Chinese Democracy Movement. A great documentary is Gate of Heavenly Peace. I believe the Chinese government should have set up a student and young persons National People's Congress and started a transition to democracy in towns and cities. That would have been a great cultural learning experience and could have avoided much corruption. After a time, democracy could evolve to provinces and the central government. The fact that the central government right here is intent on ending democracy in our 250th year is very disturbing.

"Mixed Flock comes from the idea of different species of birds gathering together for a variety of reasons including safety, cooperation, and community. In talking with wildlife scientist Derek Craighead about mixed flocks, Craighead suggested humans underestimate the sociability of animals, that wild animals will gather to be social, for fun, and for company. That’s worthwhile!

For thirty years, PDX artist’s have been a wonderful mixed flock with each artist having their own way of seeing the world and approaching their art-making.

Now is an important time to highlight and strengthen mixed flocks. Our country is a mixed flock, the “melting pot”, where diverse peoples, cultures, and ways exist together and we are better for it. June 11 Intensity, Intellect, and Ears

It is hard to say which aspect of the story of Ana Mendieta, the sadness, the outrage, or the beauty, predominates.

Mendieta arrived in the US from Cuba at age 12 as a refugee. In art school she established themes of the female body, nature, land, spiritualism, and ritual. That period, second-wave feminism, influenced a generation. She moved to New york after her MFA at about age 30. It would be about that age 30 before her parents would be able to leave Cuba and join her in the US.

Much of her work used her own body as a medium in a large number of short films and performances. At age 36, she married minimalist artist Carl Andre. Nine months later, she "accidentally" fell to her death from the window of Andre's apartment.

Her death roiled the New York art world and fueled the Guerilla Girls movement.

Ana Mendieta: Fuego de Tierra (1987) directed by Nereyda Garcia - Ferraz, Kate Horsfield and Branda Miller shows tonight. It traces her work and includes interviews with the artist. A good starting point for Mendieta is https://www.anamendietaartist.com curated by her close sister.

Recording engineer Tucker Martine grew up in Nashville and established a recording studio in his living room in Seattle. He started in the low-fi style popular at the time. Moving to Portland, he established another home studio, then busted out with purpose-built studios. Now Flora Recording and Playback https://www.florarecording.com is well established. He has ears. In the recording and music world, that is shorthand for highly trained ears and the knowledge to make a recording that translates across playback environments. Nucleus has assumed the Portland crown of mass individual multiple shows.

It began in Portland in 2001 with Charm Bracelet, organized by Brad Adkins and Chris Buckingham. It continued with Chris Haberman and Jason Brown in a variety of spaces, including the Pioneer Place Mall, home to the ill-fated WeWork.

Not art but a beautiful Portland phenomenon. Bike summer begins.

Portland bikey has many historical vectors including alleycats, continuing, but at its prime when we had physical messengers on fixies, Zoobombing, a 2 week Minibike Summer in 2003, and Minibike Winter, 2004. Minibike Winter, with travelers to Portland to engage, corresponded with the Light Bar organized by Mykle Hanson, https://msl.mykle.com/category/inventions/, social practice artist before that was invented at his home on Killingsworth in the month of February. The Light Bar led to the Winter Light Festival. Originally Minibike Summer, Pedalpaloosa expanded to the entire Summer.

It's open source. Anyone can organize a ride and seeing the website, anyone can join. Some are costumed and many have themes. The naked bike rides are part of it too.

A Page of Madness is a silent Japanese horror film set in a mental asylum made in 1929. The plot is sad and intense. You can look it up.

It was created by avant-garde artist filmmakers of the time, Shinkankakuha - School of New Perceptions.

May 30 - 31 Works

The Unkles family is one of Portland unsung art patrons. They rent space for artist studios. They parlayed the family business into buying warehouses. In the 1990s warehouses were plentiful and inexpensive. But city regulation, and the lust by tech for warehouse offices, ended that. The Unkles family maintains the tradition, only raising the rent when the studio changes artist.

Today is a rare opportunity to look inside one, the NW Marine Art Works. For these events, the artists usually straighten their studios. And, for this one, guest artists will bring work from the Seed Building, River Studios, the Boathouse, and Carton Services deemed not suited for large events by the City. They have also invited artists and crafters from outside the Unkles family studios.

May 28 Forest is Alive, Magic is Afoot

Field Studies (Symbiosis) by Fernanda D’Agostino, Lisa DeGrace, and Laura Kathrein opens today. Field Studies is an immersive multiscreen installation interpreting research on plant consciousness in forests through art.

From D’Agostino: "For the last year composer Lisa DeGrace, choreographer Laura Kathrein and I have engaged in a series of 'Field Studies' focused on the Boreal Forest and the emerging science of plant consciousness and communication. Along the way we’ve had retreats in the forests of Vermont, collaborated with microscopists and ecologists, and explored embodiment with the brilliant performance artists Lisa Kusanagi and Jaleesa Johnston who, along with Laura, submerged their human ways of knowing temporarily to imagine other ways of sensing the world. Like my last project 'Mar, Mar, e Mar,' this work is deeply rooted in the notion of symbiosis, which scientists now recognize as an essential foundation of life on Earth. Our year of research has resulted in the synthesis of our three practices into a performance/installation 'Field Studies;Symbiosis.'

I’ll be traveling to Venice, Italy where single channel versions of Field Studies will be shown at four exhibitions organized by United Media Artists in parallel with the Venice Biennale . If you are in Venice for the opening of the Biennale, come through! I’ll be there May 4-11."

Terry Riley was born in 1935. He is famous for In C, 1964, a landmark in minimalism. I had that in vinyl when I had vinyl. Continuing his musical evolution, he studied classical Indian music with Pandit Pran Nath, 1918-1996. In Portland, Michael Sterling, Lewis & Clark instructor, studied with Terry Riley and guested performances and workshops by Riley here.
