Lonnie Bradley Holley vibes with Portland Museum of Modern Art tonight. He is a self-taught artist from the Southeast and is represented in Portland by Liz Leach. The work of self-taught artists and folk artists, birthing Raw Vision and Juxtapoz, was a rebellion against questionable work questionably priced in New York. That New York art was funded by stock market speculation of the time. PMOMA has followed the self-taught artist theme including work from the Mission Art School.

August 8 Glean

We are a tube, and our material life is a tube. Ideally we can be efficient in out use of those materials. And when our use is complete, some go to the Metro waste facility. They are transported to Arlington, Oregon and they are buried in the earth.

In a project called Glean, the waste people invite artists to make work from the materials passing through the waste facility. The project is gaining momentum with the arrival in the Metro area by waste hauler Recology, which has supported artists in residence sampling the waste stream in the Bay Area. Portland has its own Urban Ore: Cracked Pots Reclaim It!

The work is on display this evening by artists Sarah Bernstein, Francesca Berrini, Alyssa Kail, Michelle Licardo and Whitney Nye.

August 4 UX Tufte

We have written before of Edward Tufte.

Tufte is the original user experience - UX - designer. He teaches one day seminars in information design which are highly, highly recommended. His specialty is a design philosophy that is at once beautiful and effective. Think that's not important? Tufte heavily cites examples of PowerPoint presentations that were poorly designed. People died as a result of decisions based on those self same PowerPoints. The seminar is reasonably priced as it includes a set of Tufte's reference books. It is also fascinating and entertaining; Tufte is professor emeritus at Yale.

Portland may have the only happy hour in the world with theremin accompaniment, at least tonight. Steve Hassett, who works days at OMSI, performs. The Theremin is an early electronic music instrument played by the motion of hands around its antennae. It is in honor of the release of the novel Us Conductors by Sean Michaels. The novel, published in the US by Portland's Tin House, expands the story of the love between Leon Theremin, the instrument's inventor, and Clara Rockmore, its greatest performer, who ultimately married another man. July 28 Song of Land

Project Cityscope is presenting a series of creative talks on the edges of architecture and design entitled New Structure.

Tonight Lisa Ward explores the special condition of Western lands, much publicly owned and "useless". She traces from the Louisiana Purchase, surveying, the Small Tract Act of 1938, to California's Senate Bill X1-2 - a far-reaching 2011 energy bill, with impacts on our region.

Ward contrasts "modern" land use with the patterns of Indian land use over tens of thousands of years.

I have always loved the dissent of Douglass in Sierra Club vs. Morton 405 U.S. 727 of 1972, later expanded in the essay Should Trees Have Standing by Stone, also 1972. That case, also known as Disney vs Mineral King, was over the plan to construct a ski resort adjacent to Sequoia National Park. Ultimately the resort idea failed, and the land became part of the national park, forever "useless".

Architect and artist Ward leads an exploration tonight of the land and our relations incorporating stills, voice, video and music.

A vintage film of a poet whose poems became songs accompanied by a live musical score, as an art film. That's this.

Sayat-Nova was a poet and diplomat who made the mistake of falling in love with the king's sister. Those poets are so romantic! Banished, he roamed as a folk singer, became a monk and was killed by the invading Iranian army.

Mr Sayat-Nova and his family lived in Syria, Turkey, Armenia and Georgia. Time to take out the map. Part of that area was part of the Soviet Union until 1991, as was Ukraine. This is a chance to look at the culture of that area as imagined in the 1700's.

July 16 No More Messiahs

A favorite book is The Songlines, by Bruce Chatwin. His story is fascinating, beginning to end. In one segment he retraces the steps of George Schaller in Northern Africa, spending time with a nomadic goatherd family. They are resisting migration to the city as their way of life is outlawed. At the same time they are engaged and want to be engaged in the deepest way with fellow travelers. Some of the children have blue eyes.

Joni Kabana's day job is something like that. She is a photographer working for Mercy Corps. One project is working in Ethiopia, where she has photographed nomads, and photographed in the city.

July 15 The Failure of Image

Humans are infinitely more obsessive than beasts in seeking their own image. Mirrors go back to the beginning of recorded history. Elephants may go there, but you don't see dolphins making selfies.

It has been only about 200 years we have had photography. Jaclyn Hudak has been working to revive those early photographic processes, some of which are extremely toxic. She speaks about her experiences in a talk, Failure is Inevitable: The Unpopularity of Alternative Photography.

Stephanie Coontz is a family culture researcher and professor at Evergreen College in Olympia. It is natural to reference the "good old days" in interpreting current change. The good old days are a mental model that is an anchor, ballast or keel. Coons had deconstructed commonly held models of the good old days, showing from original material that the "good old days" were just as chaotic, varied, innovative, even "immoral" as today. One of her books is the fascinating The Way We Never Were. This evening she speaks on the history of government intervention in family policy, gender identity and sexuality. Christine Clark is a sculptor, working large in base metals, often combined with natural materials, and a jeweler working small in fine metals. She has turned in many great works at the Nines Gallery. She is here this month with Amass, an installation of small resin units. The work started with the observation of varying scale of mountains, then trees, then groups of people; viewed at a distance, then closer as individuals. July 1 Get Real or Get Faux

Artist Philip Guston died in 1980. He was a contemporary of Pollock, Rothko and Klein in New York. He rejected abstract expressionism and the moneyed gallery world in the late 1960's and turned to political illustration-style work. Many artists have done the same since 2008, and some are working in socially conscious social practice art today.

Musician Neal Morgan became excited about Guston's work and it illustrates one of his 12 inch recording jackets. Morgan gives a talk about the artist and the work tonight.

Albina is one of Portland's oldest neighborhoods and was an independent city at one time. It's been thoroughly destroyed by highways, railroads and access to the river blocked by large industrial facilities and ruins. In fact the event is more about quiet, unassuming creativity. No rock stars.

Started by artist skater musician Chris Johansen, it includes one of his musical projects Saturday. Friday performers are Marisa Anderson, Mark Eitzel, Neal Morgan/Neal Morgan+Pulse Emitter, Christine Shields and Jonathan Sielaff. Special guests Friday are the Von Trapp Family. Yukiyo Kawano has created work of hand-dyed silk and paper, Narrow Road to the Deep North - After Matsuo Basho, inspired by Basho's original. Kawano carries within her family history as granddaughter of a survivor of the Hiroshima bomb. Non-Japanese cannot understand the social dynamics of that history which has been recapitulated in the events at Fukushima Daiichi.

The Portland Experimental Film Festival is an experiment started by Matt McCormick. It has been through a few reincarnations with new organizers. That's all good, and we are looking forward to this year's event.

The festival spans Wednesday May 28-Sunday June 1 with sit down showings, artful installations at Disjecta + live music, participatory workshops, family-friendly programs, a window installation on Alberta and after parties.

May 28-29 Thinking About Security and Internet Society

Most of us use computers and the Internet most of the time. The architecture of the Internet was developed in the late 1960's by Larry Roberts. One of the profound principles of the Internet is that all the brains of the Internet reside in your laptop or phone and in the servers at Netflix, Google, the BBC. The role of Comcast, Century Link and the companies that run fiber optic cables across the world are to passively transport packets unchanged between for a fee. The end nodes are smart and the network is a passive carrier.

That is the bedrock principle of Network Neutrality.

That also means that your phone, tablet, laptop or desktop; and the servers, are each smart enough to become infected with malware, or for the owner to install malware with intent.

One of the Internet's big thinkers on malware, hackers and bots is cryptographer Bruce Schneier.

Today he spans philosophical and political questions of privacy and policy. He is a good source to track as we are on the way to connect every thing to the Internet, memed as the "Internet of Things" or the "Internet of Everything". Combined with ubiquitous facial recognition, governing policies for the Internet are something every world citizen should be thinking about.

In a talk, "Internet, Security, and Power." Schneier creates a non-technical framework for citizens to consider how we keep ourselves out of a dystopian totalitarian future - the one we all know is coming and can visualize based on film and fiction.

We list few academic shows, and fewer of students. Not all academic galleries are geographically convenient. But they are well worth the effort if you have the time. As my first art show to see in Portland was the PNCA thesis show; since I've enjoyed them.

May 17 Effigy Video

Video art done well attracts us. It necessarily references our motion life and motion film-video experiences, while standing askance as art. That's a fine boundary line to navigate.

Video art goes through cycles of popularity in Portland. There has been excellent documentation of performance by MK Guth. Filmmakers Matt McCormick, Vanessa Renwick and others lay down the film art branch. MSHR does outstanding with digital organic performative installation. This afternoon is a talk by UCLA video artist Jennifer Steinkamp. She is known for one of the major branches of video art: installations that paint patterns, often from nature, on walls, floors and ceilings. It is beautiful work in the Hickey pattern.

Grant Corum presents Effigy Mounds. Effigy mounds were ceremonial geoglyph mounds, sometimes for burial by ancient people found throughout the Americas. The artist transformed the inspiration of visiting effigy mounds in the Americas, and experiences with the Sundance Ceremony in the Midamerican forests and plains into the installation, and a musical project, Effigy Mounds: Ceremonial Music for Spore Alter.

Corum describes the music as: “An imagined field recording in a hallucinatory cave, where collaged snippets of tape reveal the gradual opening of a deep portal, the ingestion of strange and luminous compounds, and the rhythmic pulsation of spores entering Earth's atmosphere by way of shooting stars.” Music by Corum and White Gourd for the opening.

May 15 Unabridged Lilly Pad

Did you know Portland is ground zero for floating? Not little fluffy clouds floating; we are talking about floating in a sensory isolation tank. Be your own special lily pad.

Float tanks, sensory isolation tanks, are a shallow pool, eight to 10 inches deep, of purified salt water, heated to body temperature, in a very quiet space, to float peacefully.

The idea was created in 1954 for public health research by Harvard neuroscientist Dr. John C. Lilly. Portland's Float On has published a new unabridged edition of Dr. Lilly's classic book Programming and Metaprogramming in the Human Biocomputer.

I'm a scientist. We know much more about the brain now. But there is still excellent material in Lilly's book, and it is not necessary to go all new age to appreciate it. Same place same time, is the Siggraph 2013 animation compilation. Siggraph is an academic group that theorizes, writes software and makes graphics in computers. Their compilation is competitively drawn from animation artists and creators of new effects software each year. There is a fair criticism that storytelling is lacking in many films, especially CG films. As this is a showreel, there is no intent of narrative. Huun Huur Tu, Хүн Хүртү, translated as sun propeller, is a group of singers from Tuva who have been bringing the music of their region to the outer world. They bring it to Portland tonight. Tuvan throat singing establishes a resonance which allows the singer to sing more than one note simultaneously. April 19 Obsession Velocity Broadcast

Richard Tracy, RichArt is an outsider artist in the Raw Vision tradition. He lives in Centralia, Washington, where he has transformed his yard into a fantastical installation. Over 30 years he has built a beautiful thing. He gives 55 minute tours to visitors for $5. Sadly his Art Yard was dismantled in 2013, but not before it was captured by filmmaker Vanessa Renwick who befriended the artist. Tonight his works on paper will be shown in the gallery and Renwick will screen a short film about the artist. Cellist Lori Goldston also performs.

Many people consider broadcast television, really broadcast of any kind, including print, a thing of the past. Public television, especially the BBC, is better. But in the US, public television is struggling to capture new audiences. Nonetheless, public television, and Oregon public television, does some things well. One is a series on Oregon artists. With a broad audience, public television takes a broad view of art. But that broad view has captured a few artists that interest us.

Their production is Oregon Art Beat, documenting 15 years of artists. For two months, they show visual artists and present live performances by 15 years of artists. In a mall. Very broad minded and without controversy.

April 18-19 Butoh in Portland, US, North America, World

On May 24, fifty five years ago, butoh dance was birthed by Tatsumi Hijikata in Daiichi Seimei Hall, Tokyo, Japan. Trained in European modern dance and ballet, Hijikata was part of a rebellious nationalist movement joined by artists occupying the streets of Japan. The piece was inspired by a homoerotic novel by Mishima of the same name, Forbidden Colors.

Since butoh has spread worldwide. It is an improvisational form, so each culture, and each individual brings their own spirit. One is Diego Piñón from Mexico. Piñón has studied with Kazuo Ohno, Hijikata's early collaborator, who performed into his 90's, Min Tanaka, famous for wild performances by students working on his rice farm, and Natsu Nakajima, one of the first female butoh performers. The influences of each are evident in Piñón's work. He also brings a relationship with the landscape, nature and shamanistic traditions of his homeland.

Piñón travels internationally performing. Over years he has attracted students who perform in his ensemble under the umbrella Body Ritual Movement. Tonight Sheri Brown, Amelia Burns, Leslie Castellano, Mizu Desierto, Nathan Montgomery, Christopher Mankowski, & Kevin Cochran, many of whom have worked with Piñón for more than ten years join him on stage.

April 17 Whither Society?

Photolucida is an international curation and art photographer resource based in Portland. Tonight they bring photographer and documentary filmmaker Lauren Greenfield to present her work.

Cultural processes sometimes produce extremes which are not in accord with human values. A certain direction, value or behavior can be amplified, becoming its own end, unteathered. Greenfield is noted for her photography of young women, the societal psychodynamics of beauty, and her documentary Thin. She continuously seeks new moving documentary and still photography projects focused on individuals in relation to common social narratives. Her topic tonight is "From Gordon Gekko to The Queen of Versailles: A journey in pictures, film, and culture", including an exploration of her documentary on an extreme example of the 2008 financial bubble.

Hellion has a show themed around the Portland collection of artists curated into the book Tall Trees of Portland. Matt Wagner, gallery principal, summarizes his curatorial philosophy in a Creative Mornings video. He is too humble. One of his projects is to uncover the tall trees: artists in select cities who are taking risks beyond others, and taking risks that reward. The meme comes from Japan where taking those risks is highly discouraged. He has found artistic risk takers in Tokyo, now Portland, in progress, Rio. Eva Lake is the artist's artist and accomplished cultural explorer with a solid geometric painting practice and stunning collages. April 2 Ducks, Dolls & Robots: a Genealogy of Socio-Technical Anxieties

This blog is mostly about visual art. Sometimes performance. Art and performance interesting to us and maybe to you. But we sometimes dip into other events which may be interesting to you too.

Ethnography and anthropology applied to current time are in my toolkit. Those tools of mine are well worn. One of the uses for that type of tool is the coadaption of people to change. Technology is its own self-generating change agent. The response of individuals to that change is the topic of a talk tonight.

Genevieve Bell is an anthropologist who leads a team of anthropologists who study how people use technology, and how they might use future technology. You can find many videos of her talks by search.

Tonight she speaks about about technology anxiety and coping in a talk - Ducks, Dolls & Robots: a Genealogy of Socio-Technical Anxieties. We will see if she taps narrative as a coping tool.
