Deepwater: Traces of the Arctic is a series of paintings-embroidered images by Lauren Hartman, It is inspired by the Deep Water Horizon oil and gas drilling ship disaster in 2010. The floating drilling platform in 5000 feet of water was destroyed by a natural gas explosion. The well lacked proper blowout preventers. The subsequent well blowout dumped oil for 87 days into the Gulf of Mexico until it was capped. A similar blowout in shallower waters of the Alaskan arctic would have only a few months without ice to cap, and the ice itself could impinge upon and break the well pipes, with any repair delayed until the ice melted. August 24 Self Reflection and Forest for the Trees
Sara O’Keeffe, curator at the New Museum in New York, speaks on her experience curating the museum's 2015 Triennial. The curatorial themes included: "What are the new visual metaphors for the self and subjecthood when our ability to see and be seen is expanding, as is our desire to manage our self-image and privacy? Is it possible to opt out of, bypass, or retool commercial interests that potentially collude with national and international policy? How are artists striving to embed their works in the world around them through incursions into media and activism?" For a long time, murals were essentially banned in Portland. The City felt that the intersection of the Oregon constitution and the desire to control billboards also required banning murals. That logjam was eventually unstuck, unleashing some great mural making. One project is the Forest for the Trees NW project.
Each year has expanded and there are 29 international artists this year. Tonight is a concert kick off for this year's murals. Portugal the Man performs. Forest for the Trees kickoff pop party at White Owl Social Club 1305 SE 8th. 8PM $5

They are also on the edge of entering design nostalgia and exiting design rejectionism. Mines, as in removing a layer of the earth's crust: you can't live without them, but you probably wouldn't want to live with them. Oregon has them, Colorado has a lot. South Africa does too. Listen, Baxter, by Wyatt Niehaus from Norway, is a meditation on people, ships and shores, labor and industry. Workers in his videos bring North Sea oil buried under the sea floor to the surface; they load it, up to $150 million of oil in a single load, on tankers. Not too distant from our experience loading Midwest oil on ships in the Columbia today, or piping Canada gas to be loaded in Coos Bay in the future.

July 21 Bucky's Future
Trevor Blake is a fanboy of R. Buckminster Fuller. Geodesic dome, he invented that at Black Mountain College. Efficient manufactured housing, streamlined easy to park car, a new world map projection, he invented those too. He wrote extensively and had a huge influence on the culture of Silicon Valley. His most important contribution was his writing on the future, many things he proposed are still before us to accomplish. Trevor Blake has written The Buckminster Fuller Bibliography and The Lost Inventions of Buckminster Fuller. He has the largest collection of Fuller materials outside the Buckminster Fuller Institute. He speaks tonight of Bucky, and his work.

Wouldn't it be amazing to live in an 800 year old manor, practice your art there, and invite people from around the world to join you? That is Schloss Bröllin, in the former East Germany. It's been taken over by artists and this year they are organizing their 6th international performance workshop and festival, eX...it!.
Portland performers Meshi Chavez and Stephanie Lanckton have been incorporating the Japanese dance form butoh into their work. They present a benefit performance tonight, Bröllin Voyage!, with dancers Mizu Desierto, Tahni Holt, Jim McGinn, Tracy Broyles, Lisa DeGrace; as well as performances by Lanckton and Chavez themselves.
It is a benefit will help to offset their travel expenses to participate in eX...it! There will be cocktails, drinks, food and a dance party after the performance.

Promising Waters is a series of photographs made by Mila Teshaieva in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan between 2010 and 2013. They are former Soviet republics sharing the Caspian Sea as a border. Iran and Russia complete the Caspian borderlands. The Promising Waters countries have prospered from oil and natural gas underlying the Caspian.
The Void and the Country by Paris Petridis are photographs made in Egypt in 2011.

Duplex has Habitat: A Video Mandala. The artist, Kello Goeller, performed rhythm-synched movement with others on Oregon lands, beach and in forest. She captured camp fire, river and waterfall flows. Those are woven in layers through hand painted masks into a 20,000x20,000 pixel composite as a mirrored symmetrical mandala, projected as motion video. Adjacent projections are pan and scan samples of the main composite in standard resolution. The projections tonight are accompanied by collaborator Biddy Thomas, completing the soundtrack to be presented ongoing with the piece. June 30 Let's Get Theremined
Leon Theremin invented the first electronic musical instrument in 1919. It's named after him. It used the principle of heterodyne down conversion, invented only a year before. Heterodyne conversion is used in every radio in the solar system today, and in the fastest parts of the Internet. Yes, there are several heterodyne converters working right now in your mobile phone.
You have heard the theremin, it's a continuously variable tone common in scifi soundtracks, and occasionally even pop. It's pretty easy to play,

June 29 Environmental Impact
Environmental impact statements are a tool of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1972. The law was conceived by conservative Washington State Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson. It passed the Senate on unanimous vote, the House by 372-15 and was signed by Republican president Richard Nixon. The law has been emulated in other countries. But many of our current elected leaders have unfortunately gone astray in their environmental thinking, under the influence of pecunious and rapacious corporate interests.

The Quiet Music Festival is a special favorite. It is an intimate event with musicians who are not too loud. The audience lounges on an occasional carpet-, blanket- and pillow-covered floor, lit by scattered table lamps.

June 20 Bright Aboriginal Seed
The aboriginal people of Australia have been there since 50,000BC ±10,000 years. They developed a rich land-based philosophy. The earliest surviving aboriginal art is 30,000 years ago. From that time there is an unbroken tradition. In the 1970s, the work started to become known by the Western art world. The Australian aboriginal culture came into my view with Herzog's Where the Green Ants Dream and Bruce Chatwin's The Songlines. There have been rare exhibitions of Australian aboriginal art in Portland.
No Boundaries is a show of Australian artists Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri (1958-), Paddy Bedford (1922–2007), Jananggoo Butcher Cherel (1918–2009), Tommy Mitchell (1943–2013), Ngarra (1920–2008), Prince of Wales, Midpul (1938–2002), Billy Joongoora Thomas (1920–2012), Boxer Milner Tjampitjin (1935–2009),and Tjumpo Tjapanangka (1929–2007). The works were gathered by a sole collector couple from Miami and trace years of each artist's painting.
This is the art price machine at work; we are waiting for the US to adopt a droit de suite law to allow artists to benefit.

Albina is one of Portland's oldest neighborhoods and was an independent city at one time. It's been thoroughly destroyed by highways, railroads and access to the river blocked by large industrial facilities and ruins. There are a few old buildings in the neighborhood for a sense of what was: the old Widmer building, Beam and Anchor, some buildings on Russell, the old Ripe Family Dinner building, and some are artist work spaces. The North Coast Seed Building is one, a complex of artist studios in Albina. Tonight is their annual open studios, most of the artists open their studios tonight. They also have a large solar array on the roof! Strongly recommended. May not be wheel chair accessible. 2127 N. Albina 4PM-10 Free

Burma is a relatively closed country. It is Buddhist, but its military government doesn't act that way. Photographer Geoffrey Hiller has been photographing there for 28 years. Gordon Parks (1912-2006) presents Segregation Story, from his 1950's exposures in Alabama. Much of that series was published at the time. But new film, previously thought lost, was discovered in 2011, and makes this show. Gordon Parks went on to influence history through his photojournalism work for the seminal Life Magazine. Entirely self taught, Parks was a composer, author and feature film director.

Appropriation’s rapid takeover of the 80s art market, as exemplified in Richard Prince’s unapologetic rephotographing of advertisements, marked a cultural shift from the previous decade’s conscientious ethos into an economics of greed. While such overt decadence eventually waned in the face of grim financial realities, consumerism’s hold on the arts remains afloat, buoyed by the often contrarian demands of a new digital generation. For Katie Batten, Jonathan Casella, and Sarah Mikenis—the three young artists on view in Nationale’s group painting exhibition Everything We Ever Wanted—this friction between artifice and authenticity transpires into explosions of color and pattern appropriated not from magazine pages, but the Internet’s undulating stream of imagery.
The motivating tension within these works likewise parallels a uniquely millennial belief in the fallacy of potential. Nicknamed the “Me Generation,” today’s young adults harbor impossible personal expectations continuously stoked by daily reminders of their contemporaries “success” via social networks like Facebook and Instagram. Life viewed within this construct of carefully edited online personas confuses happiness with affluence, relaxation with indulgence. Batten, Casella, and Mikenis, while also rebelling against the high formalism of their chosen medium, utilize painting and its art historical context as a means of expressing this generational struggle. Abstraction, kitsch, and the still life find rejuvenation through extravagant textures, aggressive palettes, and conspicuous accumulations that question our narcissistic digital impulses. Batten’s canvases, for instance, playfully layer homages to the flat aesthetic of Manet and Matisse with materialistic objects like trendy mason jars, iPhones, and Artforum magazines. Casella, meanwhile, utilizes a similar neon color palette for his dizzying, collaged compositions, creating almost virtual spaces wherein the two- and three-dimensional battle for visual dominance. This interest in hyperrealism also carries into Mikenis’ heterogeneous constructions. Sourcing patterns from the image-collecting website, Pinterest, she fashions simultaneously figurative and abstract visions that, while seductive in their immediate materialism, remain unattainable in their irrationality. All the way from London, artist Emily Jones presents Orange House Action Clinic at S1. Some of her past work has themed water. It is an essential life ingredient and we have not heard the last of its shortages and destructive excesses. So it is a good subject for art exploration. Hip hop culture comprises music, body language, lyrics, MC, b-boy/b-girl motion and words. Culture. It is constantly evolving and ever fascinating. Shake the Dust is a documentary on hip hop as a worldwide social change movement with a focus on b-boy/b-girl motion. Movers' moves lensed in Colombia, Cambodia, Uganda and Yemen. May 23 Chill Robot Zodiac
Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads opens today at the Portland Art Museum. It is a work of 12 sculptures; each is an animal in the Chinese zodiac.
It is inspired by a similar set created as a fountain, with the water flow representing a clock, at the Summer Palace. The originals were looted by French and English troops at the end of the Second Opium War. The palace was burned.
Ai Weiwei is the leading political artist in China. He was imprisoned in 2011 for almost three months for his work and is prohibited from traveling outside the country today. The story of the original works, their cultural sensitivity, and Weiwei's interpretation is told in a video on the project website: www.zodiacheads.com.
Portland, the site at one time of the second largest Chinatown on the West Coast, is fortunate to be visited by the sculptures. It is a great opportunity to learn about the artist and his other works.

May 6 Direct Route By Past
Once upon a time, the Portland Art Museum awoke from a traditionalist art and meandering regionalism dream and created a contemporary art program. After a few successful years of the program, the Museum hired a new director who focused on impressionism, blockbuster pop shows and alienating progressive board members. So the contemporary art staff quit, going to SFMOMA and starting PICA.
PICA took a radical approach for the time, not taking government money. It was an insight, as the culture wars by conservative politicians soon dismantled peer-reviewed curation of adventurous contemporary art at the National Endowment of the Arts. In a common tactic, funding was reduced and shifted to block grants to the states.
PICA was supported by creative technologists, creative agencies and creative individuals. It was a gathering place. Unfortunatley it is not today what it was. But they do throw a good party later in the month.
Tonight the original founder of PICA, Christy Edmunds, now performance curator at UCLA speaks. She is joined by some early PICA players, Kristan Kennedy and Topher Sinkinson. Kennedy is PICA's current visual arts curator.
The event accompanies a show at the gallery by artists PICA showed in the day.

With Direct Route, she adds more characters and narrative: "Direct Route observes a blind woman navigating her domestic surroundings, alongside landscapes and recollections prior to losing her vision. Through conversations and word puzzles with her daughter, a story emerges about the relationship between memory, sense of direction, and the texture of experience".
The 45 minute work runs in the AB Lobby Gallery for the next 2 weeks. There will be a reception for the work there, Thursday from 4PM-7

Tonight the epicenter is the 811 Building. There is a fashion dimension, and an art dimension; you can't go wrong with neither. Old Portland Hardware has vast digs in the old Portland bakery building. They have been reving up their art program with first Friday events. I'm especially interested in this one, Old Portland Hardware is taking names in their curation with this show.

James Wasson's negatives were uncovered in a family trunk. He is an African American who served as a Buffalo Soldier in WWI, and a photographer of the African American experience in Portland before Vanport, I5 and the Colosseum deconstructed the community. The Buffalo Soldiers were a segregated African American Army unit.

Ethnographic photography is a sticky wicket. It is subject to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle maxim that you cannot measure something without disturbing it. A corollary is that we each, individually and in our tools, bring observational bias.
Photographer Scott Dalton has more practice than most with the issue. He spent many years in Central America photographing the proxy struggles between communism and capitalism, between profit and destruction, between human values and exploitation, between fear and hope.

April 26 Laraaji Six
The dislocations, triumphs, tragedy, increased travel and communication of the early the 20th Century birthed many artistic innovations, continuing to today, and tomorrow. One was musique concrète, leading to expanded definitions of music, and music made by layered studio processes in expanded non-linear time, pioneered by Les Paul.
That lead to minimalism by Terry Riley. Brian Eno named ambient music, gathering all those tributaries.
A notable experimental musician in that realm is Laraaji, Edward Larry Gordon. Laraaji, like Riley, became interested in Eastern mysticism which influenced his electronically processed acoustic music. Brian Eno found him playing in a park and produced his breakthrough recording, Day of Radiance in 1980.

Between elephants, whales, dolphins on through food fish, cows, chickens and shellfish, all of which we delight in ending, they are probably far above the median in the great chain of being. Knight based his work on the National Daily Base Lean Hog Carcass Slaughter Cost reported by the United States Department of Agriculture. The description on the HQHQ website is much more surreal. In no Great Hurry - 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter is a documentary interview with the photographer-painter artist. Leiter worked as a fashion photographer. He also made contributions to street photography in the art world. The world only became aware of his paintings late in his life. He passed in 2013. The Ampersand website has a more eloquent description of his work and the film, sure to be poignant. What is sad is that respect has come posthumously, fully exploited by the art-making machinery. April 24 Wut The Yes Man
Composition Gallery does good things. When they do something first Thursday in the Everett Lofts, we don’t list it - up to you to explore and find!
They do venture out in the world and an example is their wut guise project. It’s a mix of movement, video, clothing design, visual art and gender exploration. They present it in the Gallery Homeland space in the Ford Building.
They close the event tonight with a talk by Lief J Lee - Fabric: a contemporary queer resistance.

The Yes Men are children of Adbusters, related to earlier Cacaphony Society, Fluxus and Dada artistic and culture jamming movements. Igor Vamos AKA Mike Bonanno, cofounder, began his culture jamming at Reed. He is famous for his reverse peristalsis political protest in which participants ate mashed potatoes colored with food coloring to vomit red white and blue; for his Barbie Liberation Front, exchanging talking Barbie and GI Joe voice boxes, then reverse shoplifting them into stores; and for changing the signs on Front Avenue, subsequently named Naito Drive, to read Malcolm X Street, amidst the public debate over renaming Union Avenue Martin Luther King Blvd.
With Jacques Servin AKA Andy Bichlbaum, the Yes Men continued on a grander scale, exploiting the public relations, press and media machine to announce ironic faux news with an aspiration towards how the world could be if corporate persons practiced the values of real persons.
They have had many spectacular successes, captured in documentaries and online video.
Igor is also a cofounder of RTmark, using a corporate share model to fund art projects. That has been carried forth to the Yes Lab.

We would be remiss to not mention a showing today of a favorite (of many) film, Forbidden Planet. A 1956 science fiction film, it combines a thoughtful narrative with old school gender tropes, charming in a way for their datedness. It is an interpretation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, and the prototype for the Star Trek series. Distress call, arrive at planet, seems charming, danger, gets more complicated, resolved, leave, happy, but thought-provoking ending.
In this case, the complicated is the challenge we face as we engage more machine systems and AI in our lives.
It is the first with an all electronic soundtrack, includes backgrounds by Disney animators, the ultimate straight man, Robby the Robot, and monsters from the id.
