July 15-17 Seattle Butoh Performances
Butoh is a Japanese modern improvisational dance form. It was created by Hijikata who launched a myriad of butoh lineages. Late in his career he created Hakutobo, an all-woman group centered around his mistress, Yoko Ashikawa, an artist, not a trained dancer.
Seattle is one of America's butoh centers because of the work of Joan Laage who studied with Ashikawa and performed in their second unit.
She, in turn, seeded new lineages into Seattle, Olympia, Portland and Krakow.
The result is the Seattle Butoh Festival and the DaiPan Butoh Collective.
The career of a ballet dancer usually ends in their 20's. For modern often 30's. Butoh is a little different, with the cofounder Kazuo Ohno performing outside Japan at age 93, and passing at 103, doing butoh in his wheelchair. Dancers can engage butoh at any age and exit at any age. An example is Doranne Crable, Evergreen College professor of dance and artistic director of Olympia's Kagami Butoh, who performed up to her passing.
The theme this year is the collaboration between Seattle and Olympia in butoh.

Artist Hannah Piper Burns has made an art project around snail slime as a skin care ingredient. In South America there are vast snail farms; their slime is harvested and sent to high end skin care product formulators.
She brings her project Active Ingredients: A Guided Mediation in collaboration with the Bronco Gallery to the Mississippi Street Fair, July 9; PDX Pop Now!, July 23-24; and Converge45, July 31.
You can have one of her pet snails crawl on you while watching videos of skin care ads.
And she wins the copywriting award for the month:
The magic of skincare — both proven and promised — is that we think we want to look different, but really, we want to feel different. Our skin damage betrays our inevitable implication in destruction: of our own bodies, of other living things, of the earth. We want to halt, offset, repair and above all, deny that damage, erase the evidence of our past transgressions as if banging out the dent could somehow un-crash the truck. And, we want to feel good about it. So we are promised radical recipes and revolutionary rituals, fair trade and cruelty-free systems for procuring our precious elixirs, spiritual transcendence as a viable alternative to vanity and self-empowerment through the practice of self-care. What we desire goes beyond beautification. We want absolution.
In this quixotic quest to detoxify, we will stretch the limits of our belief and tie it up in knots. We seek out, eke out and demand the affirmation of nature through our perception of its ability to heal us. That’s what brought us here, that’s why it’s come to this: snail slime. Can there be a more perfect symbol of our perverted quest for purity than industrialized snail slime extraction? We start with the snail, and then we spiral out. Way, way out.
During the tailgates I will be performing as an esthetic technologist and snail handler, offering a multimedia treatment of fresh, organic, locally-sourced and high-vibration snail slime, activated by a proprietary blend of foraged, filtered and concentrated video footage from commercials for high-end face products and dispensed via a unique delivery system. The benefits of this treatment include but are not limited to: enhanced intuitive powers, increased production of collagen and elastin, deep-frequency cell communication, reduced inflammation, stimulated meridians and neutralization of free radicals."

It is no secret that Portland is embraced by/repelled by gentrification and economic displacement today. The story of the I5/Rose Garden/Coliseum/Convention Center/Emanuel/North Portland neighborhood destruction is well known, and before it, Vanport.
That's economic, but the real story is people, individuals.
More immediate, now, artists are exploring socio-geo-individual changes right in that neighborhood, on the ground; through the eyes and experience of families.
Social practice artist Emma Colburn has been inviting families with children to talk about what's up/down/changing in the neighborhood, block by block, walking it and documenting it.

Reactive Matters is the most interesting opening tonight. Photographers Jeremy Bolen, Abbey Hepner and Shimpei Takeda work at the intersection of the impact of radioactivity, photographic materials and our history of embracing nuclear chemistry. We are not too far ourselves from Hanford which produced the plutonium for Nagasaki.
Bolen buried his film in radioactive soils around the US then shot those sites with the film. The chemical impact on the film and the radiation impact has degraded the image suggesting nostalgia, when in fact revealing the invisibility of radioactive decay.
Hepner, inspired by relief work after the tsunami in Japan, has documented US nuclear waste facilities using the uranotype printing process which substitutes uranium for silver in the print.
Takeda returned to his childhood home in Fukushima. He collected soil from his former home, shinto shrines and temples, scattered it on light sealed photo paper and then printed the scatter of radioactive pinpoints making an exposure.

May 30 Lost Rae Among Many
The Portland Mausoleum, overlooking Oaks Bottom is only open to the public once a year, today. The project started with the construction of a chapel and funeral home in 1901. In 1910 construction started on the mausoleum which was further expanded.
Because of destructive visitor behavior, the mausoleum was closed to all visits but family members. But they do open to the public once a year to wander. It is a good, but unusual photoshoot opportunity. Be respectful. There is a lot of juju there prepared to rain down on miscreants.
From 12-2 the Rae family crypt, locked year around except for family members will be shown. There may be a line, seriously.
Mausoleums are a loss leader. They require expensive building upkeep compared to cemeteries with a declining new base of customers. Same with the funeral business which was dramatized in the series Six Feet Under. That has led to consolidation in the business, with the Wilhelm family business purchasing the facility. Hey, if you are planning ahead, maybe they can plan for you even if you are scattering your ashes, which I personally think is a great idea!
And it wouldn't hurt to thank the staff for accommodating visitors. It is a residential neighborhood, be polite with parking, it is near the Orange MAX Bybee station, or go by bike.

With Project Row Houses in 1993, a community revitalized their neighborhood. The organizer was Rob Lowe. He has gone on to do other similar projects - applying the artist's creative approach to working within the community to encourage them to realize their own dreams.
Today we call that social practice art. It has it roots in Joseph Beuys proposal of social sculpture.
For his creative work through the community, Lowe was awarded a MacArthur.
He speaks tonight on Listening With Ears, Eyes, and Heart: A Gateway to Artistic Value in Unknown Places. Sounds like a good idea to me.

April 29 Ornamental Hypergate Conglomerate
Birch Cooper opens Ornamental Hypergate Conglomerate. Cooper, part of the Oregon Painting Society, does not paint with paint today. He composes electronic visual patterns, translated to print and video. He builds analog synthesizers. He performs those synthesizers. And he combines those all into his art. Tonight those patterns are created as a playable sculpture. Recommended.

Cherry & Lucic is a gallery in a garage created by Eleanor Ford, John Knight and Kyle Raquipiso. They have very occasional shows by regional and international artists.
Tonight they open a show by artist project Henry Codax. The three garage Codax are accompanied by mono prints.
They are large monochrome canvases, mining Les Arts Incohérents monochromes of 130 years ago. Henry Codax is an anonymous artist rumored to be a collaboration between Jacob Kassay and Olivier Mosset. Both artists have denied a connection to Codax. Their artist representative has seeded the unsigned work into international galleries. Some have been purchased. Some have been, or have attempted to be, flipped on the auction market, perhaps on the speculation Kassay, at age 28, has had auction sales at 1.8 million. Puzzles.

Craft Advanced Research Projects Agency CARPA / CARPA. is in residence at PNCA. Their project runs parallel to Switzerland's EToy.
They are a parody of ARPA/DARPA, a USA Department of Defense agency with essentially unlimited resources to pursue new technologies which the military could use. ARPA/DARPA created the early space program and they created the Internet. They have been seeding robotics and self-driving cars. They are great to follow if you are curious. On the other hand it sad to have the brightest people in the country thinking up better ways to kill people at great expense.
So CARPA arranges new crafts and crafts intervention in good world changing with a sense of humor too, and on a minimal budget!

Lynn Hershman Leeson is a video artist. She is also the creator of the film !Women, Art, Revolution. The film traces groundbreaking artists beginning in the about 1968 to 2010 through interviews and archival materials. April 14 Experimental Music Movement
Cecil Taylor is a piano prodigy and star in the free jazz-experimental music world. He performs tonight with butoh prodigy Min Tanaka.
I have been very, very, very fortunate to see them perform together at Aku Aku before an audience of twenty. Other close friends have performed with Tanaka san on his family farm. Both performers are intimate with experimental art.
Not experimental for play, they both have demonstrated experimental risk taking for real over years.

Michelle Grabner is the visiting curator for the Oregon 2016 Biennial of Contemporary Art. This year the selectees are more geographically diverse than ever.
Tonight Sue Taylor moderates a discussion between Michelle Grabner, Pat Boas and Prudence Roberts. Taylor is one of the few arts writers in Portland consistently publishing outside Oregon. Roberts is a noted curator with long game deep Portland and NW art experience, including with the Museum.
The discussion will be on NW regionalism in contemporary art in the context of world art.

They each have their individual art practices.
Murphy produces sculptures, prints and videos based on her electronic shapes, as well as video shot live outdoors and composited. Cooper produces electronic paintings and motion videos based on organic shapes in rainbow colors as well as building analog synths with optical and physical feedback.
Today at 2 at Upfor, Murphy gives a talk about her work along with fellow artist in the show, Alyson Provax. She has a print in the experimental printwork show up now at Upfor.

April 2 End of the World
Until The End of the World is one of my favorite films. It is one of Wim Wenders' road movies, spanning continents.
It has two beautiful problems: it's too long and its soundtrack is too good.
Both problems are solved for one night only.
The film was shot in 15 cities over 7 countries. Made 25 years ago, it presages technology we have today, and some not yet invented.
It tells the story of a secret military invention which can record movies that blind people can see. A son steals the device to record visits to his parents' friends around the world and bring them to his elderly mother who is blind. A plot complication is the impending crash of a nuclear satellite to earth. Along the way he meets Claire and they fall in love. The son and Claire are chased across the world by many characters wanting the device back, chasing the proceeds of a bank robbery, lovers and exes chasing one another and chasing some rare opals. The plot is finally resolved in Australia in scenes surreal and beautiful. It's a science fiction road movie music video made by a gifted director.

Like many films, Until The End of the World has been released at various run lengths. It streams in the US at 157 minutes. It was released on VHS at 158 minutes. In Europe it has been released at 179 and 280 minutes. Janus has restored the film and worked with the director to release a 295 minute version at 4K. That shows tonight. One night only.
The film's other challenge is a sprawling soundtrack. The selections range from top pop bands, college radio favorites, to field recordings of Pygmies singing in the Central African Republic. Many parts of the film read as a very good music video. But getting worldwide musical rights for each film release is a challenge. For tonight, that problem solves as well. But there will unlikely ever be a 295 minute worldwide release.

March 27 Sharing Sharing
Risks. We all take them. There are downside risks and upside risks.

Downside risks are when you could feel discomfort, crash and burn, be injured, or die. Upside risk is when you survive another day, succeed, make someone happy or change the world for the positive.
The world of artists is taking risks.
We usually do not - as observers of finished art work - understand the internal and continuous experience of the artist with downside risk. Artists internalize that, in every moment.
Our experience as observers of artist risk - out the other (viewer) side - is as a touchstone for our own experience of risk. That is why risk is a powerful ingredient in artworks. It is an emotional carrier in my taxonomy of art ingredients.
Portland artist Wynde Dyer is an artist who takes personal risks in art making.
Classical artist risk takers are artists like Chris Burden. He approached real body risk from a masculine standpoint. Wynde Dyer goes far beyond that in the challenges she undertakes as an artist.
Existential risk.
She has an ambitious show this afternoon, sharing the scraps. you should see, it closes April 27, today is the reception and an event to meet the project collaborators and supporters. We will return to that in a moment.
Dyer moved to Portland and opened Golden Rule, a collaborative art vintage shop. Each month she invited an artist to make an installation in the shop. Dyer then selected vintage clothing items to be sold in the shop to accompany the art.
In the 1970's to 1990's her mother, with a fabulous fashion sense, acquired clothes. Many. Incredibly all one size. But she never discarded any.
Her single mother died alone in Wynde's small California childhood home. Wynde was called to remove her mother's every possession from that childhood home.
It became Wynde's burden to return each piece of clothing to the world.
Over several years, she returned those clothes through art exhibitions in the Golden Rule store, in itself a social practice art project, though that term was not yet common.
Her work has continued.
She reprinted her mother's letters to a lover inmate for an installation, 2010.
She constructed a 1/2 scale model of her childhood home in 1751 Easy Street: For Sale by Owner, 2011. She spent weeks at night alone constructing it along with many volunteers at other times throughout.
She shredded her family photographs and then meticulously sorted the shreds by color, in Sorting Things Out, 2012.
She engaged in performances recreating intensely physically sickening experiences from childhood phobias - Things That Aren't Safe, Are, 2013.
She created the very, very intense Frantic Efforts to Avoid Real or Imagined Abandonment in 2013. The work included a cycling show in images of her mother's many lovers. Those mother's lovers competed (successfully) for her mother's attention; her child was emotionally abandoned, and they did bad things to that child growing. The work covered every wall with a list of the first names of every of the artist's crushes densely inscribed by hand on the gallery walls in metallic leaf, paired with her name. Trying to figure out adult relationships with imperfect models. It is a meditation on personal value when we are small, but when we need to be large, in relation to parental and personal crushes.
She has worked with Chinese artists recreating past living space illustrations.
She is a social activist. She is an accomplished organizer for taxi drivers facing exploitation and extinction.
In comparison, Burden is a poseur. We believe Dyer will be recognized as surpassing him and surviving too.
Dyer returns with a deep-rich project in Sharing the Scraps. She has engaged houseless-homeless individuals to create designs. She has sewn them in the manner of quilts along with her own designs from colored poly tarp material. Poly tarp - blue is common and you know. It is a common Chinese-manufactured import available in many primary colors. Each work is for sale to benefit rent support for individuals about to be made homeless by Portland's changes.
For the reception, Dyer has invited individuals from Hazelnut Grove, a self-organized houseless community in North Portland to help out. A displaced Portland chef, Amanda Luna, will be cooking tasty food for the event. Our Olivia Darlings provide movement performance about 5:45PM. Music by Brendan Hanna. Those mother's lovers competed (successfully) for her mother's attention; her child was emotionally abandoned, and they did bad things to that child growing. The work covered every wall with a list of the first names of every of the artist's crushes densely inscribed by hand on the gallery walls in metallic leaf, paired with her name. Trying to figure out adult relationships with imperfect models. It is a meditation on personal value when we are small, but when we need to be large, in relation to parental and personal crushes.
She has worked with Chinese artists recreating past living space illustrations.
She is a social activist. She is an accomplished organizer for taxi drivers facing exploitation and extinction.
In comparison, Burden is a poseur. We believe Dyer will be recognized as surpassing him and surviving too.
Dyer returns with a deep-rich project in Sharing the Scraps. She has engaged houseless-homeless individuals to create designs. She has sewn them in the manner of quilts along with her own designs from colored poly tarp material. Poly tarp - blue is common and you know. It is a common Chinese-manufactured import available in many primary colors. Each work is for sale to benefit rent support for individuals about to be made homeless by Portland's changes.
For the reception, Dyer has invited individuals from Hazelnut Grove, a self-organized houseless community in North Portland to help out. A displaced Portland chef, Amanda Luna, will be cooking tasty food for the event. Our Olivia Darlings provide movement performance about 5:45PM. Music by Brendan Hanna. Malin has graphic elements mixed in with impressionistic figure elements. She is from Cal Long Beach and Rutgers. Ford, minted at Pratt and Rutgers mixes loose painting and cutout opaque panels as sculptural elements with a word or two. They have a psychedelic feel to me.
