Vanessa Renwick is a filmmaker, installationist and provocateur. She has a great rich history of work. One of the themes of her work has been the fauna of the Northwest. This show is centered around birds. She has made a video of the vaux swifts, scored by Sam Coomes, and projections of a loon, a snowy owl, a raven, a woodpecker and a peregrine. Hellion has a show themed around the Portland collection of artists curated into the book Tall Trees of Portland. Matt Wagner, gallery principal, summarizes his curatorial philosophy in a Creative Mornings video. He is too humble. One of his projects is to uncover the tall trees: artists in select cities who are taking risks beyond others, and taking risks that reward. The meme comes from Japan where taking those risks is highly discouraged. He has found artistic risk takers in Tokyo, now Portland, in progress, Rio. This blog is mostly about visual art. Sometimes performance. Art and performance interesting to us and maybe to you. But we sometimes dip into other events which may be interesting to you too.
Ethnography and anthropology applied to current time are in my toolkit. Those tools of mine are well worn. One of the uses for that type of tool is the coadaption of people to change. Technology is its own self-generating change agent. The response of individuals to that change is the topic of a talk tonight.
Genevieve Bell is an anthropologist who leads a team of anthropologists who study how people use technology, and how they might use future technology. You can find many videos of her talks by search.

March 29 The Ice Man Goeth
Usually we do not note school galleries. Some, like Linfield College in Mcminville and the UO museum in Eugene are consistently excellent. PCC Cascade and Sylvania have cycles, as does Clark College in Vancouver. Reed often pulls stunners. We count on other other blogs to cover. We cover UO Portland because they are excellent and you can bike.
But a little trafficked photography gallery is on the menu this month. And they are not a drive.
The Camerawork Gallery is downstairs Peterson Hall at Linfield College Nursing Campus. This month they have a National Geographic-landscape photographer, Camille Seaman with The Last Iceberg.
It is the type of photography foreign to the art world because it is commissioned. The travel costs are high and the time involved is substantial. As art, this type of landscape photography struggles with a one note chord of beauty.
But this material is an important topic. We are all for beauty in art and these are beautiful. Very. They also have a very heavy narrative which art likes.
Seaman has photographed icebergs afloat. Icebergs separate from the ice floes and glaciers covering Greenland, parts of Alaska and Antarctica. Smaller ones are pieces of the Arctic sea ice - the vast ocean around the North Pole.
Explorers for oil and gas, as well as seabed minerals, are in hot pursuit of drilling all those places. Without ice it would be significantly easier. Their devils' handiwork is the destruction of that ice and other externalities to the detriment of life. And we are all complicit in our use of energy.
Other artists have approached the topic including Susan Robb with her proposed Sea Ice Life Boat. Here is new research result of loss of ice from satellite earth studies.

March 14 Zeitgeist
Portland photographer Holly Andres had an interesting childhood. But so did we all. Andres has been able to recall the emotional resonances of those childhood experiences in the time, and recreate them, in photography, now. There are many, many photographers traversing this space. For few, if any, I know, is it personal. Andres recreates the feelings of those childhood dreams with friends as actors in a stop motion narrative. You may not know the story, but you know there is a story. And at a subconscious level those story lines are forming tendrils around your story lines.

Chiaroscuro is a conceptual performance by Matt Doyle. He has perfected the wall surfaces of the Recess Gallery, painted them black, then painted them white. Tonight's show is the documentation. Recess will also release a book on curation and custody by Tori Abernathy, gallery principal, artist and curator. Doyle is the sound designer for film Automated Futures. It places high frequency trading of financial instruments in the context of the post industrial decline of the rust belt economy. The vehicle is a road trip along a privately owned $300 million optical communication cable built by Spread Networks which connects the Nasdaq and NY Stock Exchange data centers in New Jersey with the Chicago board of trade. It also connects to a large multi tenant data center building owned by Google in Chelsea. While there are many fibers on that route, this one is a few milliseconds faster because it is shorter.

Chiaroscuro is a conceptual performance by Matt Doyle. He has perfected the wall surfaces of the Recess Gallery, painted them black, then painted them white. Tonight's show is the documentation. Recess will also release a book on curation and custody by Tori Abernathy, gallery principal, artist and curator. Doyle is the sound designer for film Automated Futures. It places high frequency trading of financial instruments in the context of the post industrial decline of the rust belt economy. The vehicle is a road trip along a privately owned $300 million optical communication cable built by Spread Networks which connects the Nasdaq and NY Stock Exchange data centers in New Jersey with the Chicago board of trade. It also connects to a large multi tenant data center building owned by Google in Chelsea. While there are many fibers on that route, this one is a few milliseconds faster because it is shorter.

The March Music Moderne is an example, the old-timey revival and its influence on rock and folk, many shades of punk, new psych, the Valentnes-curated-in-the-day flows, the Rock and Roll Camp for Girls phenomena, gamelan, Indian, African, the list goes on.
We have many artists that are creative polymaths, and pursue music making as a creative facet. Chris Johansen is one. He has a visual show up at PMOMA. The art world embraces the dynamic between the Confucians and the Taoists. The Confucian pole is all about a hierarchy of curators, venues, collections, critics, collectors and artists, dollars too. The Taoist pole is about experimentation, DIY, and influence on society and aesthetics within, the unassuming sage changing the world.

We have visited Peace Corps volunteers on station, worked with NGO staffers who are former Peace Corps, met UN officials who were influenced to follow world changing careers because they observed Peace Corps volunteers in their home town in Zaire and we knew the gentleman who designed the Peace Corps at its founding using an ethnographic approach.
So we think the Peace Corps is A-OK, in fact, it is the best it can be. It is one of our country's greatest accomplishments.
If you are interested in possibly joining the Peace Corps they are having an in-person event today. You can meet returned volunteers with their stories.
There are significant student loan benefits involved and the Peace Corps is a great spot between undergrad and graduate school in a variety of fields, for international business, NGO's and State.

February 28 China Art Close
This show opened on our snow day. It is closing tonight with a reception 6PM-8.
Changjiang River waves behind drive the waves ahead. China. It is big. It is changing fast. It has all the communication overlays of, say the United States. Internet usage is higher and social media, mobile everything are thriving. The country is largely optimistic. The family structure is strong. Even so, it is hard to follow China from afar, and on the ground, the view is limited by the geographic extent and shear numbers. And I have to say I find lecturing China as immature.
University of Oregon professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory, Jenny Lin, has gathered a sample of contemporary art across media and geography. They are presented in a deep dive in her courses. And for you they are on display in Portland.

February 15 Self(ish) Expression(ism)
I think we have mentioned artist, musician, skater Chris Johanson once or twice before. I think we have mentioned the Portland Museum of Modern Art - PMOMA - before. And if you have seen the shows at PMOMA, you might come to the conclusion that Johanson is an influence on the Museum's aesthetics. And you might be right.
