Bedstock is an online event today with performances by musicians and authors from their beds and kids in their beds for children all over the world who are sick in bed.
It is a gift and fundraiser for MyMusicRx, a 20 year project by the Children's Cancer Association. Bed stock is conceived by Anomaly in NYC and organized in Portland by the creatives at YouWho.
Performers include The Decemberists, Sallie Ford, The Von Trapp Family, and more than 30 other musicians along with authors Cheryl Strayed, Chelsea Cain, Jon Klassen, Carson Ellis and Mac Barnett reading children's books from bed.

The Prequel project is a mentoring program for recently graduated artists. The eight artists have their project show at S1.
Prequel has done a great job with a very small amount of money, Portland-style. There is no cost to the artists to participate. They received a Precipice Fund grant for 2015. But Precipice grants are one year only. They are working to independently fund 2016.
As part of that project funding strategy, they have an auction this evening. Each artist has proposed an about 3 hour project in which you can participate with the artist. They all sound fun and some are humorous - prequelpdx.org/artist-date-auction-2015/

November 18 William Jamison Redux
William Jamison and Jeffrey Thomas opened a gallery in Portland in 1985 with a branch in New York. It was one of the early serious contemporary art galleries that followed on Arlene Schnitzer's Fountain Gallery, birthing the Laura Russo gallery, and the young Elizabeth Leach Gallery.
Jamison passed of AIDS in 1995. His staff, Charles Froelick and Jane Beebe, divided the artists and opened their own galleries which operate today.

November 4 The Ride
Big things start small. Portlander Paige Powell moved to New York in the 1980 and worked for Interview Magazine. That time was a great creative period in the City. Powell found herself right in the middle of Andy Worhol's Factory and dated Jean-Michel Basquiat. She captured that in stills and on video.
Thomas Lauderdale, a Grant grad, returned to Portland after studying piano at Harvard. He would borrow the grand piano in a Pearl District restaurant as the neighborhood was transformed. He put together a band for a benefit, which became the Pink Martini, one of Portland's finest musical exports.
Lauderdale is also a photographer. When Powell showed him her boxes of photos, he urged her to catalog them. Ultimately the director of the Portland Art Museum worked with Powell to curate them into a show, The Ride.
The Ride, a video installation and hundreds of photographs plus a room by Kenny Scharf, opens tonight with a reception and a performance by Pink Martini.

The Intangibles line of ephemeral wearable technology meditates on the shifting nature of place, self and access in the climate of fiber-optic-fast obsolescence. Comprised of three chimeric amalgams of preexisting wearables, the line conjectures at the form factors of future gadgets as they grow more intimately on and into us.
Under the auspices of selfhood, techno-fetishist fashion colonizes the body on behalf of capital. Intangibles is your uniform in the class war, offering privileged access to boutique knowledges, niche socializations and enlightened entertainments. As information systems become incorporated into the body through fashion, life is vectored outward, electronically fragmenting it into a fine blood-mist of data points.
Technology is often tritely described as ethically neutral. This is to ignore the built-in complexities of new technologies as well as the inherent goals of their makers (i.e., profit.) Determination about the fundamental purpose of a thing is foreclosed well in advance of its use, swathed in impenetrable terms of service. Moreover, the devices and services we use also change us. We become bots in their net. This intent and tendency can be redirected, but requires cognizance, cultivated skill and solidarity among creative networks, both IRL and URL.
Intangibles devices are made from the “biodegradable” plastic, PLA*, popular in disposable table ware, and will rot for compulsory participation in the upgrade culture.

Arlene Schnitzer was Portland's first contemporary gallerist. She and her family have been champion arts supporters and even buyers of local artists. Tonight they present London artist Ellie Ga with Measuring The Circle. It is video and sculpture inspired by the Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt on Pharos Island. It is the first lighthouse tower, built around 280BC. It was a wonder of he world in its time until toppled by earthquakes between 956 and 1323. The stones were recycled as is universal in that part of the world.

Blue Sky Gallery was started by artists in NW Portland of 23rd when that was a run down cheap neighborhood. Then they moved to the old PCVA walkup space in Chinatown when the neighborhood was unpopular. Then they had a space in an old brick Pearl District building guaranteed to be destroyed in an earthquake when the Pearl was just getting respectable. That was 40 years ago. Along the way, they have broken photographers like Richard Misrach. Commercial galleries watch them to recruit new artists.
This month they have arranged many of their photographers to print over 300 works in small format ~8x10 in one of a kind edition for sale at a very reasonable $40, plus whatever tax deductible donation you might add.
Thomas Alleman has photos of cities Xiangshawan, Ordos City and Hohhottraveled in Inner Mongolia, China. His monochrome Holga photos capture the modernization and industrialization of these cities in a nomadic high desert. The area has one quarter of the world's coal reserves, natural gas and rare minerals; it is a national sacrifice zone. And it is following the development with a Chinese face tactic of large Han in migration, diluting the indigenous Mongol population. Perhaps it is the reverse of the historic pattern of Mongols taking control of China.

October 1-3 Memories Before History
Butoh is an experimental modern dance style originating in Japan in 1959. Sankai Juku from Japan and France is responsible for exporting butoh to the world beginning in the early 1980s. Their style is one of the most refined and elegant - they are a great introduction to the genre. Video excerpts of their performances are widely available on the Internet. It is extremely rare for groups from Japan to tour the US. There are occasional performances in Portland and Seattle by local performers.

Wynne Greenwood fits in perfectly with the current Alien She show now at PNCA. She was a riot grrrl artist in 90's Olympia, and she still is today, albeit in Seattle and an intervening MFA from Columbia.

September 23 Women, (Data, and the Internet of) Things
Ethnography is one of the most useful tools in my toolbox. It is woven into design by pioneers and mentors like Robert Textor and Lucy Suchman. Portland has its own leader in the field, Australian Genevieve Bell. She has a talk tonight: Women, Data, and the Internet of Things. It has been a focus; her ideas of how it applies to domestic family life are explored in her book Divining a Digital Future: Mess and Mythology in Ubiquitous Computing.
The Internet of Things is an en vogue term for objects of all kinds to sense their surroundings or interact using a connection to the Internet to reach their "brain" in a data center. The Nest thermostat is an example. It uses computers in Google data centers to decide how to use energy efficiently while keeping the temperature comfortable. Exercise sensors like the Nike Fuel Band or the Jawbone Fit Bit would be other examples. The best design gives the devices a natural interface, like your phone or increasingly voice, and hides the complexity of the where, what and how of the "brain". Science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke conceptualized it: "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Or another way of saying it is "it just works."

Deepwater: Traces of the Arctic is a series of paintings-embroidered images by Lauren Hartman, It is inspired by the Deep Water Horizon oil and gas drilling ship disaster in 2010. The floating drilling platform in 5000 feet of water was destroyed by a natural gas explosion. The well lacked proper blowout preventers. The subsequent well blowout dumped oil for 87 days into the Gulf of Mexico until it was capped. A similar blowout in shallower waters of the Alaskan arctic would have only a few months without ice to cap, and the ice itself could impinge upon and break the well pipes, with any repair delayed until the ice melted. August 24 Self Reflection and Forest for the Trees
Sara O’Keeffe, curator at the New Museum in New York, speaks on her experience curating the museum's 2015 Triennial. The curatorial themes included: "What are the new visual metaphors for the self and subjecthood when our ability to see and be seen is expanding, as is our desire to manage our self-image and privacy? Is it possible to opt out of, bypass, or retool commercial interests that potentially collude with national and international policy? How are artists striving to embed their works in the world around them through incursions into media and activism?" Should be a brainy talk, O’Keeffe graduated from Reed in 2010 with a degree in art history. The talk is at Reed College in the Chapel 3203 SE Woodstock Blvd. 6:30 Free

That logjam was eventually unstuck, unleashing some great mural making. One project is the Forest for the Trees NW project.
Each year has expanded and there are 29 international artists this year. Tonight is a concert kick off for this year's murals. Portugal the Man performs. Forest for the Trees kickoff pop party at White Owl Social Club 1305 SE 8th. 8PM $5

I've been through my metaphysics stage and I'm on to neuroreductionism. And since my interest is not to analyze art, I avoid art theory. Roy Harris does not. He is emeritus professor of linguistics at Oxford, and a semiotician. The Great Debate About Art is his 2010 essay on art theory.

Jan Kempenaers has photographs from the former country of Yugoslavia of WWII memorial spomeniks, large 1960's-1970's sculptures. They are not being maintained. They are also on the edge of entering design nostalgia and exiting design rejectionism. Mines, as in removing a layer of the earth's crust: you can't live without them, but you probably wouldn't want to live with them. Oregon has them, Colorado has a lot. South Africa does too. Marc Should has photographs of the Brakpan abandoned minescape, and the South Africans living there. Listen, Baxter, by Wyatt Niehaus from Norway, is a meditation on people, ships and shores, labor and industry. Workers in his videos bring North Sea oil buried under the sea floor to the surface; they load it, up to $150 million of oil in a single load, on tankers. Not too distant from our experience loading Midwest oil on ships in the Columbia today, or piping Canada gas to be loaded in Coos Bay in the future.

July 21 Bucky's Future
Trevor Blake is a fanboy of R. Buckminster Fuller. Geodesic dome, he invented that at Black Mountain College. Efficient manufactured housing, streamlined easy to park car, a new world map projection, he invented those too. He wrote extensively and had a huge influence on the culture of Silicon Valley. His most important contribution was his writing on the future, many things he proposed are still before us to accomplish. Trevor Blake has written The Buckminster Fuller Bibliography and The Lost Inventions of Buckminster Fuller. He has the largest collection of Fuller materials outside the Buckminster Fuller Institute. He speaks tonight of Bucky, and his work.

July 18 eX...it! Contingent Evolution
Wouldn't it be amazing to live in an 800 year old manor, practice your art there, and invite people from around the world to join you? That is Schloss Bröllin, in the former East Germany. It's been taken over by artists and this year they are organizing their 6th international performance workshop and festival, eX...it!.
Portland performers Meshi Chavez and Stephanie Lanckton have been incorporating the Japanese dance form butoh into their work. They present a benefit performance tonight, Bröllin Voyage!, with dancers Mizu Desierto, Tahni Holt, Jim McGinn, Tracy Broyles, Lisa DeGrace; as well as performances by Lanckton and Chavez themselves.
It is a benefit will help to offset their travel expenses to participate in eX...it! There will be cocktails, drinks, food and a dance party after the performance.
