Philosophy and metaphysics, as we know it on the Left Coast, seemed to spring forth simultaneously in Greece, Nepal and China about 2500 years ago. The English had a running start about 800 years ago, the Germans had an impact in the 19th century. But it is the French who have dominated the 20th. Six is eleven.

Six is the annual performance of 6 six-channel musical performances at 7PM for about 3 hours. It is in its eleventh year. While the audience chills on cushions and blankets on the floor or walks about, the musicians construct their performance over six surrounding speakers in six channels.

This year is Cat Ross, Marbletop Orchestra, Strategy, Felisha Ledesma, Rebecca Gates+Marcus Fischer and Choir.

April 19-23 Photo Lucida

Photolucida happens every two years in Portland. It is a 'photography festival' wherein photographers may have their work critiqued by gallerists and experienced photographers, gallerists may find photographers, photographers are selected for recognition, and everyone makes love not war. This isn't an art talk. But it is a talk about archiving digital art. Eventually, the Sky Will Fall: The Crisis of Sustainability in the Digital Humanities is a talk by Andrew Johnstone. He is a young scholar studying the topic from the Digital Humanities department at King’s College London. April 6 Dance, Dance, Evolution

Documentary maker Eric Nordstrom has made Moving History: Portland Contemporary Dance Past and Present. It records the family tree of performers, choreographers and presenters between the 1960s and now. Modern dance under all its names is a small corner of the performance world. It is expensive to maintain a large warm space with a good floor in cities afflicted by real estate speculation while at he same time it needs a large population to attract the small percentage of people interested to be audience. Performance careers are often short, as in sports, but the pay for dancers is little to none. Nordstrom has captured the narrative of many of those who made, and make, the dance dream in Portland.

March 13 Fin Ne Pas Fin at 88

We thought the Fin de Cinema had ended. But the rumors of its demise are greatly exaggerated. It is an occasional series of beautiful, exotic and obscure classic art films shown with a live score by Portland musicians.

Akira Kurosawa, one of Asia's most revered filmmakers, made Dreams at 80. It is an episodic mythical abstraction inspired by his dreams. It reads like a Greenway film, without the maddening pretense of Greenway.

Musicians tonight are Jonathan Sielaff of Golden Retriever; Brown Calculus, a project of Vaughn Kimmons - Brown Alice, Popgoji, Tribe Mars and Andre Burgos of Tribe Mars; Akila Fields of Shy Girls and Palm Dat; and atmospheric composer Dylan Stark.

Video Mixer PDX is a meetup, demonstration and hands-on opportunity with video synthesizers. Examples include LZX Industries, Paracosm Lumen and Glitch Art BPMC.

Analog video synths have been artist tools since the 1960s. The NTSC (and PAL) analog video signal is delicate because it had to run the analog televisions of 1941. It added color in 1953, but had to be back compatible. The result is that the analog video signal is easy to alter for artistic purposes.

Later video synths and tools to alter the signal entered an era of hybrid analog-digital. The image in the digital frame buffer could be processed independently of the analog video signal with the Amiga Video Toaster, the Fairlight CVI and others.

Falling prices and more muscular laptops lead to the golden age of live video mixing to accompany EDM, with innovation in the UK and the Netherlands. Popular software included VDMX, Livid, VJamm, Green Hippo, Modul8, Pilgrim, Isadora and more. They were often combined with hardware analog mixers from Panasonic and Edirol which had fallen in price due to larger markets: school television studios and the use of video in churches.

The challenge is the artist interface.

A generation of software, like Processing, inspired by the MIT Media Lab, used virtual processing blocks connected by virtual pipes.

Today's demonstration is focused on patchable synth modules, analog and virtual. It is similar to Processing, but with physical patch cords. The virtual version, Paracosm Lumen, can exist within a system of virtual video pipelines, like Syphon, in software.

February 23 Collecting Uncollectible?

Upfor, Leach and PDX are some of the few galleries in Portland representing media artists. Video-film, sound, synthesized visuals, VR, artist games, and what the future holds.

They come on electronic media, magnetic recording, DVDs, memory sticks, the cloud. How to preserve them is an interesting topic in itself. Are you going to be able to play them in 50, 100, 500 years? How are they editioned in the age of infinite reproduction?

Upfor has a talk this evening on collecting media art. Part of the talk will be locals Alex Payne and Nicole Brodeur relating their experience of having an Electric Objects EO1 screen broadcasting art into their home.

I'm suspicious of that platform. They do not allow searching for artists or collecting. What is the artist paid? The Uber-Spotify of arts? How does it relate to the layers in music: labels, ASCAP/BMI, streaming? Those are value chains diminishing artist income - business-law-review.law.miami.edu/digital-royalties/? (Spotify has vociferously lobbied it needs to pay artists less.)

Portland artist Stephanie Simek shows Table of Elements (and Minerals) in the Portland Building alcove gallery. She selected favorite minerals silicon, quartz, calcite, iron, copper and bismuth and made white light holograms of samples. The holograms are displayed in small pockets of a table. February 3 Black America and the World

Portland photographer Intisar Abioto shows The Black, portraits from around the world, tonight.

She is known for her photo essays Black Portlanders and State of Black Oregon: photographs and accompanying personal narratives. This project includes portraits from three continents, seven countries and eighteen cities.

February 3 - March 4 African Film Festival

The Cascade Festival of African Films is a favorite event. Each year on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for a month they show films from all over Africa.

This year they have films from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Israel, Kenya, Mali, Morocco, Niger Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia and Uganda.

Every single one of the films is free!

Most are shown on the PCC Cascade Campus on N Killingsworth. The opening night, Friday February 3, is at the Hollywood Theater, also free.

That opening night film is by Chris Kirkley, DJ Sahel Sounds. It is a retelling of the film Purple Rain, staring musician Mdou Moctar from Niger, and filmed in Niger. Moctar performs his music at 11:15PM after the film's second showing. Free

February 25 is a children's program of films and storytelling by Baba Wagué Diakité of Mali. There is a week of films by women and a program of staged readings of African plays.

The PCC Library maintains a copy of all the films shown over 27 years for in-library viewing.

February 1-4 Light Art

The Winter Light Festival is an installation of light art by over 20 artists, participatory illuminated events, talks and affiliated events scattered throughout the city. It runs running Wednesday through Saturday at OMSI, in the surrounding East Bank area and in the affiliated locations.

The organizers and advisors of the Winter Light Festival are artists, professional lighting designers and veterans of art festivals with night time light art installations.

The event itself is free. OMSI will host food and drink for sale if you would like to get inside to warm up.

February 1 A Japanese Spaghetti Western

The 1985 film Tampopo is a fun classic from Japan by the great director Itami.

Widow Tampopo operates a failing ramen restaurant along a highway. Gorô is a truck driver inspired by the American West, with his cowboy hat, a truck festooned by a set of bull horns and his sidekick Gun in an early roe for Ken Watanabe.

He becomes inspired to work with her to improve her ramen. After a few comic twists, plenty of slapstick and wry commentary on Japanese cultural foibles, Tampopo's ramen shop becomes a national phenomenon. In the last scene, he rides his truck off into the sunset. It is a spaghetti Western!

January 5 Westside Art Openings

Winner of the copywriting award of the month, Bad Dreams is a show by Emily Wobb, a "patriot in a post-patriotic era... plan[ing] narratives, cycles of creation, destruction, and re-creation [of] American identity as spectacle."

"I'd never even passed beyond Ohio before. When I drove across the country to Bakersfield I saw the Rockies for the first time, and just had that romantic view of the United States, like "Wow! This is such an amazing place and I want to see all of it!" I got the travel bug and I wanted to see all the United States and Canada with my car. I drove to Alaska for a month and loved the adventure but mostly the time that I spent by myself. It felt freeing and I felt a stronger patriotism than I had ever felt before. That has a lot to do with this show, thinking back to being free, sort of, and exploring that naive patriotism that goes into the idea of "America's free and beautiful!" Especially right now. I'm thinking about how it's beautiful sometimes and not others, a lot of these feelings came up before the final election decision too. I feel guilty and betrayed by my love of my country."

She is cofounder of the Bronco Gallery. Some of her work has focused on suburban houses, car culture and airliners.

Blue Moon camera is one of the few refuges of analog photography. Their customers source film and equipment, and can have all the chemical processing done there.

They have customers across the globe.

Once a year, for the last 14 years, they host a customer show of photography. They pick images from their workflow based entirely on impact.

Martin Luther King School is an arts and Mandarin immersion K-8 school off NE Alberta. As part of their art program, they have shows in their KSMoCA - King School Museum of Contemporary Art. It is a project with PSU's social practice group.

Tonight, early they present an Introduction to Galactic Alienology. It is a collaboration between the students at the school, artist Carson Ellis and her son, Hank Meloy.

The artists have illustrated imagined alien creatures.

Artist collective PDL presents The Bureau of Arts & Culture in Seattle's King Street train station. It updates Seattle as a "City of the Future," reprising the optimism of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, lensed through Seattle's contemporary artists today.

Artists in Seattle are facing being priced out of the city and a puzzling disinterest in creative exploration by the tech employee base. Around 2000, designers, artists, agency-types, musicians and tech were engaged in a fertile mix. Lately SF, Portland and Seattle are missing it.

The show includes reimaginations of King Street Station, EMP, Harbor Island, Woodland Park Zoo, Olympic Sculpture Park and other civic spaces.

The artists are also sponsoring a blood drive at the event where a pint of blood can be exchanged for art.

November 22 Suspended Moment

Yukiyo Kawano opens Suspended Moment: Activating the Nuclear Past + Present, tonight, with a butoh performace.

Her installation includes about half scale models of the Little Boy and Fat Man atomic bombs, kanji caligraphy on paper lanterns from the Seattle Hiroshima and Nagasaki memorial ceremony, and fragments of her grandmother's komono sewn together with the artist's hair.

It is personal; she is the third generation of her family present at, and surviving, the bombing, a hibakusha.

There is no American cultural equvalent.

There will be a butoh performance by Meshi Chavez, the artist and poet Allison Cobb with music by Lisa DeGrace. Poet Cobb grew up in Los Alamos, design center for the first, and only used, thankfully, nuclear bombs. Some early, and many subsequent, butoh performers were influenced by the history of the bombings which were about 19 years before the first butoh. Butoh artist Isamu Ohsuka, founder of Byakko-sha, is also hibakusha, in his mother's womb.

Yukiyo Kawano's artist website and the show announcement have more eloquent explorations.

The Fat Man bomb sculpture is covered in fabric inscribed with poetry from the great master Basho recording travels across the country by foot in his own journey to the North in 1689. That route, passing near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is still traveled by pilgrims.

The artists are planning to present their installation and performance at Hanford, Los Alamos, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, 1945 nuclear bomb sites, and in the Fukushima power plant area. The artist website has those details.

The show is brief, until November 30, with limited hours. It is timely, with the president elect proposing proliferation of nuclear weapons of total war.

November 13 The New American Collage: Colorful and Messy

Israel Lund is a Brooklyn Artist working in abstract multi-color silk screen.

His is process work, starting with loose inking through an open screen onto canvas. The resulting pattern captures the weave of canvas with a low fi noise-look. Then the artist photographs the canvas and burns that into a screen. The process is repeated in layers over several canvases, and sometimes incorporating mobile phone samples of other artists' work, burning it to a screen and layering it in.

The work is colorful, +1 for beauty; but not screechingly bright or poppy, also welcome.

Lund is a PNCA graduate in 2011. His work returns home for this show.

José Carlos Tassara from Peru puts the international in Worksound with his exposition Amigos Imaginarios.

In many countries, advertising selects Western models or models with with Western features in contrast to indigenous faces. This creates an unnecessary distortion of culture, even destructive.

The artist creates concrete sculptures inspired by indigenous faces, in units multiplied and repeated. He is also known for surreal illustrations.

Pablo Ortiz Monasterio has Desaparecidos, photographs exposed throughout the world, then overlaid with ink. They are the artist's commemoration of students who went missing in 2014 Mexico on their way to a protest demonstration. That demonstration in turn was to commemorate an unknown number, thought to run in the hundreds, killed in 1968 at a demonstration in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, Tlatelolco, Mexico City.

Alexander Chekmenev from Ukraine has passport photos of elderly residents, and a second series, coal miners from Donbass. That region is the breakaway area, the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, which has been at war the last two and a half years and where Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down.
