August 14 DIY Art in 1950s Japan
Neglecting the American-Native American war of expansion between 1690 and 1924, the last war on US soil was the civil war. It was 4 years, 150 years ago. They did not have modern weapons. But we are still fighting that war today.
Japan engaged wars of expansion too. The United States entered one of those wars in late 1941, transforming the conflict into total war with modern weapons. The definition of total war and absolute war vary. When it was formulated in the 1800s, modern weapons did not exist. I use it to mean war on civilians with modern weapons. By the time of the atomic bombings, which are the ultimate expression of total war, several Japanese cities had been already been leveled.
Tonight's talk is about individual artists and community groups of artists that flourished in the Japan of the 1950s. Protests in 1959 and 1960 against the US-Japan Defense Treaty also included street theater and experimental performance, leading to enduring artistic movements.
Americans have a limited understanding of the cultural impact of war on their home soil, and no understanding of total war. So the impact of those on artistic creativity is foreign. We make those war decisions today in the abstract, but the impact is not abstract for the individuals involved. We are sowing generations of unhappiness and, for some, the desire for revenge.

MSHR has Drift Iteration Paths, a large distributed musical synth and sculpture. It uses electronic circuits connected to optical circuits. The lasers, LEDs, incandescent bulbs and light-sensitive detectors make a continuously evolving sound and light show. They are part of a sculpture with Mayan- or ancient Chinese-like mystic sculptural units.
MSHR is now operating in NYC and getting some great shows there.

August 9 Suspended Moment
Suspended Moment is a performance and a sculpture commemorating the atomic bombings in Japan on August 6 & 9, 1945. Yukiyo Kawano was born in Hiroshima. She has sewn her mother's kimonos into the shape of one of the bombs. It is suspended in the performance space. Meshi Chavez & Kawano perform butoh on that set with support by poet Allison Cobb, musician Lisa DeGrace and projectionist Stephen Miller.

July 14 Designing Information for Life
We have written before of Edward Tufte.
Tufte is the original user experience - UX - designer. He teaches one day seminars in information design which are highly, highly recommended. His specialty is a design philosophy that is at once beautiful and effective because it is detailed.

Tufte cites examples of PowerPoint presentations, the ultimate somnambulant pablum, that were poorly designed. People died as a result of decisions based on those self same PowerPoints. Tufte has discussed the PowerPoints leading to decisions in the Challenger and Columbia disasters in past seminars as an example. The seminar is reasonably priced as it includes a set of Tufte's reference books. There are slight group and student discounts. It is also fascinating and entertaining; Tufte is professor emeritus at Yale. Best professor you never had? Yes. Recommended.

Newspace Center for Photography permanently closes tonight. They continue 2 weeks of scheduled youth classes. They homed a community, created a place for learning and experimenting, they curated great shows.
Object Memory is a show by Eli Coplan, Addie Lehuauakea Fernandez and Kalaija Mallery. Inspired by shape memory metal alloys, the show captures the interpretations by the artists of memory projected into space and shapes returning to form after deformation. The show in a basement gallery is curated by Tessa Bolsover. Recommended. July 6 Westside Art Openings
Brenna Murphy presents a floor installation, Axis Spread, with daily reconfiguration. It is made of her signature cutout shapes, reminding ancient Mayan or Chinese architecture, and digitally printed blankets. In both, color abounds. Her nightly reconfigurations are a way of adjusting the relationship of ideas embedded in the secret language of the components. There is also a preopening Wednesday. She and collaborator in the MSHR project have decamped to NYC, illustrating if you have talent you don't need an MFA, but you might want to get out of little Portland on your journey. Whitney Nye and Anna Siems, longtime Russo Lee artists, open paintings tonight. Nye has Midst, detailed component paintings representing change in Portland in an abstract way. Siems has Essence. Portrait photographer Sage Sohier has worked for many years perfecting her Arbus gaze. Her mother, Wendy Morgan, now 89, was an in-demand fashion model in the late 1940's. Photographer In this show, Witness to Beauty, Sage has updated fashion shots with her mother, her self and her sister, Laine, as models. The work spans the first decade of the millennium and includes family photographs in the 1950's and '60's. It's generational relationship work.
Between Sheets and Seamless is an exploration in staged portraits and still lifes by Nakeya Brown of the intersection of female beauty ritual, consumer culture and identity as a black woman.
