I never met him, but there was a color scientist at Kodak dedicated to studying the history of skin tone in print. Over the years in print magazines, skin tone has wandered into green, orange and blue. Color management is the term of art for reproducing the colors in nature in a naturally believable way. Color management was built into film; our eyes are very sensitive to the correctness of skin tone. Today the computer in your camera does the same, then you can remix it further in Photoshop.
Shirley Cards, named after Kodak model Shirley Page, were portrait standards including color patches used to calibrate photography from film to print. Similar systems are used in video. Their history is traced by Dr. Lorna Roth at Concordia University, Ontario, Canada, for instance: www.cjc-online.ca/index.php/journal/article/view/2196/3069.
The challenge is that if the final image we see, a photographic print, a magazine print, a web image, video, or projected film has a figure with a different skin tone to a Shirley card, and the Shirley card is used to correct the image, the skin tone will not be accurate. (We leave for a moment the abysmal lack of calibration in computer screens and home entertainment TV screens; Filmmaker Mode, welcome!)
In about the 1980's Kodak introduced Shirley cards with Caucasian, Asian, and African models on the same card. Meanwhile, Fujifilm introduced its own models to more accurately reproduce Japanese skin tone. Today, we have a variety of mass-produced color checker targets, and the implied class setting of Kodak's models have been updated as illustrated in Getty's surreal version at www.colourbalance.lornaroth.com/projects/shirley-card/.
Contemporary artists and social commentators worldwide have incorporated the male gaze and the Shirley Card into their creative analysis, though we don't see much critical thinking about beauty and the absence of male models, to say nothing of implied class and income/asset inequality. Maybe we need a Nomads or Residents of New York by Serrano, set in Portland? Nonetheless we are starting to get traction on simple things like first aid bandages.
The Presence of Color by painter Jeremy Okai Davis are portraits inspired by the Shirley Cards. He works in portraits from photographs with a great awareness of color, so the show is an ouroboros. For ballet, the body begins its decline through a cascade of injuries for most in their early 20s. All the while emotional expressiveness is on the rise. So there is a small window where they are balanced at their combined maximum. Modern dance can be more tolerant of aging. Butoh, the slow, ultra-modern style from Japan, and originated by Hijikata at age 31, is one of the most celebrating of age, with performers into their early 90s and beyond. Eiko is 67.
Eiko Otake and Takashi Koma Otake began dancing together in their early 20’s in Japan. They are partners with a family and have only performed together for 38 years. They studied political science in college, and many of their works respond to environmental and social concerns we all share.
They are MacArthur Fellows, the first couple to receive that award.
New York City residents since 1976, they had a studio residency, an over 6000 square feet quarter floor, where they developed work and hosted performances in 1999 and 2000 in the World Trade Tower. Post the attacks, they adapted their work Offering to be performed for free throughout New York City parks.
In 2003 they brought Offering to Reed College, outdoors, and performed River in the Jamison Park fountain. It was a great privilege to work with them to stage the Portland events.
Eiko returns to Portland with work including some made in response to the Tōhoku earthquake tsunami and the subsequent Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

The advance of modern physics is an amazing story.
Nuclear chemistry is a little different than electron chemistry. It gives us what the alchemists wanted, transforming one element to another. There have been naturally occurring nuclear reactors: www.scientificamerican.com/article/ancient-nuclear-reactor/.
Since the first human-built nuclear reactor, we have been able to do nuclear chemistry. The economics of WW II, and the Faustian bargain of many physicists, gave us the nuclear bomb, a very fast nuclear reactor.
There were two bomb designs. One used U-235, purified at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The other used Pu-239 made at the B Reactor in Richland, Washington. It was the first large scale reactor.
The B Reactor and nuclear history is the subject of Portland photographer Harley Cowan's large format photography. He grew up in Richland.
This show is Manhattan Project; it documents the Manhattan Project National Historical Park in Richland.

August 4 Sun, Shadows, Stone+
Portland photographer Terry Toedtemeier was a cofounder of the Blue Sky Gallery and founding curator of photography at the Portland Art Museum. He built the museum's collection.
A retrospective of his work, Sun, Shadows, Stone, closes at the Museum today.
Photography became practical about the time of the American Civil War. The military hired photographers to document that war. Post the war, many of those photographers were employed on great expeditions to document the Western United States. Photographers William Henry Jackson, Timothy O'Sullivan, and others made enduring images of the Western landscape. The intent of the government was to encourage settlers. But the stunning large format exposures also supported Transcendentalist beliefs and offered an existence proof of God in the beauty of nature for many.
A self-taught photographer who studied geology, Toedtemeier continued the tradition of the great Western photographic expeditions, but with a more humble Northwest spirit.
This afternoon, there will be a panel discussion of his work.

Photography became practical about the time of the American Civil War. The military hired photographers to document that war. Post the war, many of those photographers were employed on great expeditions to document the Western United States. Photographers William Henry Jackson, Timothy O'Sullivan, and others made enduring images of the Western landscape. The intent of the government was to encourage settlers. But the stunning large format exposures also supported Transcendentalist beliefs and offered an existence proof of God in the beauty of nature for many.
A self-taught photographer who studied geology, Toedtemeier continued the tradition of the great Western photographic expeditions, but with a more humble Northwest spirit.
This afternoon, there will be a panel discussion of his work.

Some of it includes plastic of many colors, primarily polyethylene. Like upcycler Denton Plastics, the Hackers shred the plastic, mix the colors and melt it back together. They were part of a beach cleanup mobile-making group project doing that at this year's Spaceness.
There is also a show by Collin Richard - re:Presence. August 3, the Hackers have a lecture and participatory workshop on the plastic process.

Kazakstan is a big country in American's blindspot. Where is this country? Maybe they know it by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat parody, which has nothing to do with the country. In fact, a Borat song was accidentally played in place of the Kazakh national anthem in a highly embarrassing international situation. It would be like playing the Simpson's theme in place of the Star Spangled Banner.
I was fortunate to consult in Kazakstan for some international agencies. We interviewed many Kazakh officials and everyday people to understand what was going on. So I've kept up an interest in the country.

June 4 Anniversaries
Portlandorusnow is 15. Its interest in the arts in Portland goes back about 10 years before. We are still having fun! Our intent has always been to note events in advance of their happening, sometimes shortly, to a day, to a few days. We aren't interested in theory, criticism or history; we are interested in our own immediate experience; sometimes the work or the artist's relationship to our experience. We don't want more readers, we want reader to reader relationships. We list work we like and think well of. We list work in genres we are uninterested in, but think is good within its context. We list events to meet other creatives for conversation. We list unusual events that might be below your radar.
We are going to make just about our only political post ever. June 4 is also 30 in relation to the Tiananmen coda to the Chinese Democracy Movement of 1978-1989. Americans process June 4, 1989 Tiananmen in the American Christian absolutist and judgmental framework. I think the crushed aspiration of two generations and the lost discussion of democracy in China is the greater loss. The real source material is democracy wall posters. In that era, and early 1990's, the discussion within China was whether the Northern values of the Revolution or the Southern values of business at at any dishonest cost would prevail.
What would China be today if local and provincial democracy had headed off corruption? On need only look at artist Ai Wei Wei's art works around the Sichuan earthquake. This year is a good time to revisit the film Gate of Heavenly Peace, contemporaneous to the 1989 democracy movement. Readers may disagree, but a slight compromise by the students and the government could have created a better outcome. The government should have given the students the responsibility to organize an advisory shadow young persons' NPC. The topic is of interest to me, I was scheduled to travel to China that exact time to study Tai Chi.
American democracy is in trouble, so we can focus here, rather than afar. We have a broken mediasphere, a broken social mediasphere, education falling behind, a lack of interest, and more. Only we can fix American democracy.

The Hellion Gallery, formerly based here, is now focused on projects in Mexico City and occasional international pop ups. This is one, Taller del Diablo. Koichi & Hiroko Tamano perform with Kudo Taketeru. The Tamanos were very early performers with the founder. They were the very first to perform butoh in the Americas.
Taketeru Kudo performs solo. He studied with the Tamanos and Waguri, then performed with the seminal French and Japanese Sanki Juku between 1995 and 1998. His current troupe in Japan is Gien-kan.
Shadowtender is a project based in Portland with Brooklyn collaborators. They perform Lieber II tonight, based on the intersection of the id and the queer body.

A long time ago, contemporary art was downgraded at the Portland Art Museum by entering director John Buchanan. John Weber went to SFMOMA and Kristy Edmunds founded PICA. March 29 Nanoplastic Dough
Angela Haseltine Pozzi is a late career artist living in Bandon Oregon. She collects beach trash, plastic, and crafts it into large sculptures of the sealife it is impacting.
It is impacting us too. Most salt in food is processed from seawater. Our single use plastics find their way to the ocean where they are battered into smaller and smaller pieces. Alla Nazimova (1879-1945) was a groundbreaking Russian immigrant to America in 1905. Her story is fascinating - look it up. She produced and stared the silent film Salomé in 1923. It does have an enigmatic plot. You can see it tonight with a live music score by Dolphin Midwives and Indira Valey. Recommended. March 13-17 Skeleton Flower
Seattle's Degenerate Art Ensemble is a long operating musical and performance project. They are inspired by the Japanese modern dance theater Butoh and contemporary music composition. The skeleton flower, diphylleia grayi, has a magical property. When it rains, the petals become transparent, like glass. Skeleton Flower is the new performance by the Degenerate Art Ensemble. It tells a personal, not as rare as it should be, story of family trauma; and, not as common as it should be, transcendence through creative endeavors. Butoh is an obscure, very postmodern, dance style from Japan. There are a few cities in the US and Canada where it happens regularly, including Portland. From time to time, there are small workshop classes. This one, taught by Meshi Chavez, Mizu Desierto & Stephanie Lanckton, has a workshop performance including the students as its finish. The Portland Art Museum guested the Portland Museum of Modern Art guesting Sun Ra. Sun Ra engaged Afro-futurism from 1936.
Spaceness is an annual art confab organized by Julia Barbee, Matt Suplee, Alison Jean Cole and many volunteers. It is loosely themed on futurism, the unknown, space, aliens and regional nature-based mysticism. The weekend, beginning late Friday dinnertime, and extending to Sunday noon, includes visual art, installations, music and performance. It's centered at the Sou'wester hotel trailer park in Seaview, Washington which has a direct connection to the Pacific Ocean beach where some installations engage. Recommended.
