June 21 Summer Purpose Transformation Retors

We don't usually cover glass. It has its own aesthetics and collector base. The material is overwhelmingly beautiful which can distract from its impact on contemporary art viewers. Often the narrative or conceptual ingredient we love in contemporary work is absent.

June 17 Seeds

Albina is one of Portland's oldest neighborhoods and was an independent city at one time. It's been thoroughly destroyed by highways, railroads and access to the river blocked by large industrial facilities and ruins. It's polluted too. There are a few old buildings in the neighborhood for a sense of what was: the old Widmer building, Beam and Anchor, some buildings on Russell, the old Ripe Family Dinner building, and some are artist work spaces. The North Coast Seed Building is one, a complex of artist studios in Albina. Tonight is their annual open studios, most of the artists open their studios tonight. If you subscribe to the evolutionary psychology model, we are all sex workers. Artist and audience. And there has been a history of collaboration in Portland between artists and sex workers going back to Marne Lucas working with Danzine in the late 1990s, starting the Sex Worker's Film Festival, and costarring in the infrared short film The Operation. Art From the WPA Era is a show of paintings and prints made in the 1930s. The country was in the Great Depression. The government hired musicians, writers, performers and visual artists through the Work Projects Administration in Federal Project Number One, and the show has some of the visual results. Linus Pauling went to Washington High School. From there he went to Oregon State University and CalTech. He is the only person to have won two solo Nobels.

June 7 - August 6 Who is Watching the Watchers?

Artist Ai Weiwei, and architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron open Hansel and Gretel in the Park Avenue Armory in NYC. The large installation is a comment on our state of surveillance. The installation creates an environment surveilled by cameras and drones.

Portland-Oregon art schools PSU, PNCA, OCAC, UO, L&C show graduating artist thesis shows. It is an opportunity to perceive a pulse in art. I bought my first work from a thesis show. You can find the details on the respective websites.

The last show at White Box, which also had a dedicated video space is tonight. The UO used the space to colonize Portland and dominate the indigenous PSU.

Academic galleries are unique - they don't have a commercial aim, and they have a budget. In that category, Reed & PNCA still bring out of town artists. PSU, Marylhurst, OCAC and PCC Sylvania have good curatorial programs. This one had some good shows including contemporary Chinese artists. So sad to see White Box go.

Chris Moss has been curating White Box. He received his BFA from PNCA. He curated a series of shows, the Donut Shop in Portland, including a show consuming a house off gentrifying Alberta Street which included a rocket. He later gained an MFA from NYU.

Functionally United, opens tonight and is highly recommended.
