June 2 Outside the Frame in 360 Degrees
From the organizers, the pieces are:
"Masks, the most turbulent piece, reveals what living with schizophrenia really feels like and the humble dreams of the protagonist—to have a place to live and a caring roommate. Filmmaker Colefire says: 'To give more of an understanding of psychosis because a lot of the time it’s very invalidated, and I think it will help people understand what the other side of it is like.'
Hibiscus explores challenges of contemporary Black life. 'Black trauma is not just the experience of racism but manifests as a constant state of vigilance and the internal dilemma of whether or not to bring more Black children into the world,' says Hibiscus filmmaker Rhone. 'Our Black children are guaranteed the same racial stress and trauma that continues to be neglected and trivialized by White America.'
In One of My Names is Bash, a Black queer woman provides a 360-degree view of her first apartment. The work portrays Bash’s emotions tied to the space, seen through her own eyes, as transcends homelessness."
It is a unique project and future opportunities to see it are unknown.

May 13 City of Blue
She has a new work, opening this afternoon, The Sun is a Mouth of Blue, cyanotypes with gouache. It is related to her City of Trees residency in New York. Cyanotypes are a chemical-based imaging process exposed by UV-A, freely available from the sun.
Her large scale installation works are modernist, inspired by, or in, nature. She works in video and drawing too. She is up to date on social practice works. Her work is visually beautiful, and it brings layers of ideas. That is apropos her interview with the late Dave Hickey, a proponent of beauty as an ingredient in contemporary art, but not the only ingredient. http://www.laalamedapress.com/davehickey.html His writing on beauty in art is easily searchable.
We hope she develops a connection to the Lumber Room and makes public artwork here.

Blue Sky has Matthew Moore's Post-Socialist Landscapes.
Russian history has many defining points. The fall of the last czars and the socialist revolution. The rise of Hitler and his defeat left Russia with a Soviet Union. The vicissitudes of the Cold War, a world war of philosophy and ego by its respective parties. The denouement of Soviet Europe and the coda of Gorbechev's release of the union. The rise of the oligarch state. The invasion of Georgia, disputed patches, and now the war of Ukraine. The ultimate expression of Deng's soft power in China gaining control of Russia, adjacent to its own strange quest of Hong Kong and Taiwan, is the current chapter.
Blue Sky shows are planned far in advance. So it is pure accident that his photographic exploration of the post-Soviet countries lands now. They are photographs of abandonded, destroyed, and removed monuments to Soviet times. There is an excellent explanation of the project on his website. http://moorephotographs.com/post-socialist-landscapes.html.

April 28-30 Graveyards Gardens Memories Remedies
Caroline Shaw https://carolineshaw.com/ is a composer noted for being the youngest Pulitzer awardee for music. She is a prolific composer and collaborator. Her instruments are violin and voice. Her compositions have expanded to other instruments and up to date spoken word samples and electronic effects on the voice as an instrument.
Tonight her work Graveyards and Gardens is a collaboration with modern dancer Vanessa Goodman. Shaw is based on the East Coast, and Goodman on the West Coast in Vancouver, BC.
A description wins our copywriting award: "A dance. A concert. A curious analogue-driven performance experience. A visual and sonic album of reconstructed memories and distortions. Revealed in an immersive environment of nature and technology. The warm glow lure of antiquated innovations and embodied experience. It’s a living album that continues to fold and unfold into itself. Digging deep into the beauty of how the body remembers." I saw this, it is strongly recommended.

A 'wall of synths," paralleling Coltrane's "wall of sound" referred to a dizzying array of knobs and wires in the Moog days. ASUNA brings a floor of keyboards in work "100 Keyboards." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh3H6x1GFn4. It is on tour.
100 plastic portable keyboards change pitch as their batteries run down. It takes up part of a warehouse for two evenings here to walk around with your ears.
"100 Keyboards is a live music performance/installation featuring as the title implies over 100 keyboards. This performance focuses on the phenomenon of “interference sound," the complex distribution of sound pressure and other parameters as sound waves of the same frequency but with a different direction of transmission overlap. As each keyboard plays a sustained note of a certain pitch, and as the number of notes increases, a “moiré of sound” is created. The auditory experience is akin to weaving an individual “textile pattern" (the original meaning of “moiré") and a sound equivalent to the visual “moiré effect.” As you change the direction of your ears while listening, or move to a different location, the complex, interfering sounds and resonances in space will produce a different aural pattern composed of buzzes, loops, and beats, unique to each location. Most of the keyboards being played are inexpensive products or made as toys, so the pitch/tuning of each key may be slightly off and fluctuate slightly in pitch when played for a length of time. This slight misalignment creates the complex resonance" - the artist.

Even big famous works, that required a lot of money to stage with a symphony, were savaged by critics in their time. An amusing collection of those is in the book A Lexicon of the Musical Invective. The author of that Nicolas Slonimsky, https://www.encyclopedia.com/humanities/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/slonimsky-nicolas-nikolai-leonidovich, outlived his own critics to age 101. It is worth an entertaining read if you think classical music is boring.

April 9 ¡Superheroes!
The Photolucida Critical Mass award is a big thing. Federico Estol from Uraguay won the Blue Sky solo show award this year. His project is Shine Heroes/Héroes del Brillo.
The project "started three years ago as he began engaging with the shoe shiners of Bolivia. There are 3,000 shoe shiners who go out into the streets of La Paz and El Alto suburbs each day in search of clients. They are from all ages and in recent years have become a social phenomenon in the Bolivian capital.
What characterizes this tribe is the use of ski masks so they will not be recognized by those around them. They confront the discrimination they face through these masks; in their neighborhoods no one knows that they work as shoe shiners, at school they hide this fact, and even their own families believe they have a different job when they head down to the center of the city from El Alto.
Estol collaborated with sixty shoe shiners associated with the shoe shiners newspaper "Hormigón Armado" with the idea to create a photobook. Together they planned the scenes during a series of graphic novel workshops depicting the new Andean architecture of El Alto as its background. In this process, the shine heroes became both producers and protagonists of a street-style photobook to fight against a social stigma.
Today this group makes its living primarily from selling the photobook and postcards of the project more than from being shoe shiners. This casts light on the possibilites of art in transforming discrimination into a sign of struggle and survival that could ultimately help promote social integration."

To Dog a Portal is a group show by the Well, Well family: Andrea Alonge, Ben Buswell, Erik Geschke, Jeremy Le Grand, Morgan Rosskopf, Katherine Spinella, Jessie Rose Vala, Jessie Weitzel Le Grand, and John Whitten.
"Through pattern, pixelation, and repetition in action or motif, artists in To dog a portal observe the natural world through scientific data, human interaction, and magical thinking. Emboldened by the possibility of science and magic coexisting, this exhibition engages in a willful suspension of disbelief. Balancing these works on the horizon of time through careful precision in the making process, these artists cultivate a field for observing the super-natural qualities in seemingly everyday occurrences."

Rachael Zur and Heather Lee Birdsong have Told and Untold.
"Can we be content with the fragmented stories that will be told about our lives? Between what is said and unsaid, people create narratives about those they have loved and lost. Domestic objects and uninhabited rooms also give accounts of a life, allowing for those no longer with us to be felt as being simultaneously present and absent. Heather Lee Birdsong’s paintings of Pacific Northwest forests and architectural elements reflect on grief: how we hold it and, variably or simultaneously, fail to hold it. Rachael Zur’s expanded paintings of objects from living rooms give form to the residue of lives lived held in domestic spaces. Together the artists use place as a narrator to recall the absent."

Portland is fortunate because Seattle is fortunate to have some very talented performers of butoh, Japan's contribution to contemporary dance. Joan Laage studied and performed in Japan with a small group created by the founder of the genre. In that lineage, the improvised movement is inspired by images from nature. Laage is giving a workshop Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday evening is a performance.
Laage performs Rivers Running Red and Cosmo Rapaport & Sophia Solano perform their own works too.
"Rivers Running Red has a haunting commissioned score by Seattle musicians. The piece is greatly inspired by an article exposing the practice of sending women off to the mountains to remain in huts and, often not surviving the harsh conditions, fueled by the belief that women are unclean while menstruating. It is also a reflection on this monthly cycle being celebrated as a sacred passage in other cultures. March 20 A Mystical Equinox
Soriah is Portland's own Tuvan throat singer and performance ritual creator. He performs once or twice a year here in costumes of his own making and music of his own composition. He has a big event May 17 when he shares the stage with Bauhaus at the Schnitz.
Tiare Valouria has deep movement roots and performed with her dark belly dance group, Serpentine, along a continuous thread of creative works. Now she performs as Valourian Theater with tonight's collaborators, Sol'Aura Pearl, Rachel Smith, Autumn Sage KaliMah and Paige Roselene.
Portland has its own small underground puppet community. One, the Nightmerriment Puppet Theater, also performs tonight with guest Sataray from Olympia.

March 16 & 18 The Journey of Gómez-Peña
Back when he was collaborating with Coco Fusco, another brilliant cultural critic and performer, they performed at the Portland Art Museum. After that, a new museum director started having prayer meetings in the museum at lunch time and refocused the museum on old French impressionist masters. The contemporary art program exited. John Weber went to SFMOMA, now he is director of the Schnitzer Museum at UofO in Eugene. Kristy Edmunds formed PICA with support of several Jewish members of the museum board who the new director made uncomfortable. Edmunds is now at MassMOCA nee UCLA and Melbourne.
He brings 2 events.
For The Pandemia Chronicles, he uses the John Cage method to randomly select material to present and perform. "Utilizing a casino roulette spinner to select his live spoken word texts and props, he is unplugged, thinking out loud and articulating the challenges and possibilities of reinvention during confinement and in the midst of multiple pandemics." He is joined by his wife and performance partner Balitronica Gómez. That event is at Pacific University.
He is doing a similar remix in a brief one hour retrospective performance from his archives at the Portland Art Museum. Much of Wednesday is poetic reading. Friday he started with his birth and about the first 30 of his performance years. You can start with the show announcements, see the performances, then dig into his work as you like. Much of his historic work would be considered contemporary today.

The announcement wins the copywriting award for the month: "Our lives flow in historic currents, sometimes direct and personal, others, more distant. As NChi’Wana (the Columbia River) runs through our communities, the past flows through us, literally, culturally, and figuratively, defining the lives of people connected to it. Wyam (Celilo Falls), sacred and primary to Indigenous people for hundreds of miles around, was destroyed by The Dalles Dam in 1957, obliterating a way of life, a thriving fishery, and far more than that. The flooded falls displaced those who celebrated and relied upon its essential life-giving forces, destroying a vital culture."
This new venue is right on the TriMet MAX train line.

February 20 Thank You for Supporting the Arts
Viva Las Vegas is a writer, musician, and a dancer. Her work, over years, is an intellectual exploration of sex work, social politics, and the experience of exotic dancing. Thank You for Supporting the Arts her film biography.
We live still in the Victorian age, in a puritan land, immersed in the media of beauty to sell soap. Our brains engage neuro-aesthetics formed from birth. In that neural wiring, emotion is entwined too. Viva Las Vegas is interested in how that all unwinds performing, and in individual personal conversations, in the club. The film is her explanation of how dancing is art within the circle.
PICA put together a fine exhibition of the history of sex work politics in Portland, the community of workers, and their artworks. https://www.pica.org/events/symposium-art-activism-publishing-sex-work. Oregon's famous First Amendment of the Constitution of 1857 is stricter than the federal one of 1787. In State v. Robertson, 1982, stripping moved into the circle of legal, from outside, not-legal, in Oregon. Now the line between art and not art is increasingly being discussed for the variety of sex work.
