The Daipan Butoh Collective in Seattle present their annual outdoor, Wandering & Wondering, in Seattle's Kubota Gardens.

July 18 Skate Fight Love Club

The Boedecker Foundation is project of the late Sandy Boedecker who founded the big shoe company's skate business. Skylab built a fantastic building for the foundation. It hosts youth arts programs. They have a professional recording studio built out by Chris Funk. He moved on to build a studio in Iceland. The main space is filled by a skate bowl. It is like the empty SoCal swimming pools occupied by the mid-1970s Zepher skate crew who brought surfing movement to skating. The space hosts occasional cultural events.

Tonight they show the film Fight Club. It is based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk. Palahniuk has lived in Oregon since college and is a champion of the working class. He documented his own shenanigans among the about early 1990s Portland Cacophony Society, in Fugitives and Refugees: A Walk in Portland, Oregon. He has been a prolific writer and he is a supporter of new fiction writers.

He had been camping, was assauted, returning to work at Freightliner, none of his coworkers asked about his injuries, he concluded they did not care, inspiring the book.

Fight Club tells the story of the narrator and Tyler Durden. Durden is the founder of the Fight Club and fights corporations on the side. The narrator has a corporate job protecting a major automaker from liability. The two characters are the same person, a projection of the narrator. It is visually rich, dark, and worth a watch. The rules of the Flight Club are a cultural meme many know and reuse.

July 4 Independence Community

My observation from my work overseas is that when you have layers of colonizers, the earlier layer it assumes victimhood by the new layer, and discounts their own bad behavior. It is perpetuated by identity gridlock. So there is a lot of discussion of what independance was to who at various times. Happy personal independence day!

Michael Bernard Stevenson Jr brings An Attempt at Representing a Spectrum.

"An Attempt at Representing a Spectrum offers a view into Michael’s ongoing activities at Jefferson High School, which swirl around the 2020 Modernizations Bond that voters passed in the efforts of “transforming the historic Jefferson High School into a modernized 21st century center of learning.” How do we care for the history of Portland’s historic Black high school? What is the archival language of a high school? And most important to Michael, how can art offer young people access to tools and technologies for their future?

Since 2022, Michael has created situations for students to encounter and relate with Jefferson High School’s past via yearbooks and other material culture. These gatherings have never been just about the past, but how Jeff’s students can imagine future selves and impact the new school. An Attempt at Representing a Spectrum shares a slice of results in process. Sculptures that malfunction as Jefferson High School’s archives, yet hold the ideals of honoring and preservation. Through transformations of historic photos to architectural ceramic tiles and 3D scans, to 3D prints, to bronze casts, the objects on display utilize the process and materials of public monuments for those who are either willfully ignored or purposefully forgotten."

The big event this evening is the Oregon biennial of contemporary art.

It has had many homes and curators. Out of town curators can shake up natural insular patterns and provide a path to show out of town in the future. This year the curators are Jackie Im and Anuradha Vikram. Vikram took her degree in critical studies at CCA, then for 20 years has operated worldwide, in addition to teaching at UCLA. Im is based in the Bay Area and was a visiting faculty member at PNCA-Willamette which has given her some familiarity to artists in Oregon.

Ryan Pierce brings Impossible Springs. Pierce is known for schematic social process sculptures, then map-based work. Impossible Springs are schematic imaginary landscapes from a process work. "Improbable Springs is primarily inspired by a six week hike Pierce went on in 2018, traveling from Phoenix, AZ to Silver City, NM. The natural springs scattered along the way were his primary source of water on his journey through the Southwest. The aesthetic of these secluded springs - sometimes marked by wayfinders such as fence posts, stacks of rocks or nothing at all - significantly influenced this new body of work. Water is depicted in many of the paintings, its significance undeniable. The imagery hints at the possibility of past flooding, lingering puddles, possible drought, spartan spigots amidst the wildflowers. There is something hopeful in a future where these springs still exist, that nature continues to persist in these significant ways despite the accelerating climate crisis."

The Oregon Alliance for the National Museum of Women in the Arts - https://nmwa.org/ - has Sue Taylor presenting Alice Neel and the Politics of Figure Painting.

"An occasional painter of expressive city- scapes and still lifes, Neel (1900-1984) remained passionately dedicated in her practice to the human figure. Her portrait subjects ranged from family members to the socialists and labor activists she admired, art-world and literary cognoscenti, and the down-and-out denizens of her upper West-side New York neighborhood. Working doggedly yet unrecognized for decades, Neel became her own publicist, armed with an entertaining personality and a repertory of slide lectures stressing the remarkable originality of her pictures. The feminist movement of the 1970s brought the by-then grandmotherly Neel a renown she had so long deserved. In this presentation, Taylor will focus on the artist’s unique approach to portraiture and the nude, with special attention to Neel’s anti-sentimental concepts of motherhood and female identity."

The Sou'wester is a vintage trailer motel and lodge in Seaview, Washington. It is a short walk to the sea and adjacent to a wild native forest. They have arts and crafts events throughout the year. March 14 Getting Stronger Every Day

I met Miranda July in the late 1990s at the Tidbit Gallery. The gallery had a storied short run. We struck up a conversation involving her red polkadot boots and patterned Summer shift, then ongoing about her writing that became Me, You, and Everyone We Know.

She had been doing zines with Johanna Fateman, then spoken word, and spoken word with images https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J419epd_oJA, performing venues like 17 Nautical Miles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA8E7Zb9P9c She collaborated on shows with Olympia and its diaspora Riot Girl bands including Cadallaca. She released several recordings of her stories on Kill Rock Stars and K records you can find. I suggested her to PICA, who commissioned Love Diamond, and PICA suggested her to The Kitchen. She has since built a sustainable career in social practice art, including Learning to Love You More, movies, and writing.

Along the way some of her short performances became short movies. Tonight you can see a few.

Tatsumi Hijikata was born 96 years ago in Northern Japan. At age 31 he created the first Butoh dance work a new form of modern dance. He died at age 57 leaving a family tree of performers though it is still a niche few see live.

""Sleepless Nights explores the anxieties that keep us awake at night. In the transitional phase between wakefulness and sleep, the unconscious comes alive, quickening our thoughts to the realities and fears we suppress in waking hours. Doomscrolling, insomnia, and poor mental health are the results of carrying the uncertainties that litter our contemporary social, political, and physical landscapes.

To cope with our anxieties, we stay busy in our waking lives. Busyness in contemporary life is not simply a response to inflation or grind culture, but ultimately, a survival tactic. The moment we slow down, our worries catch up - we will be overcome by the weight of the unknown. Instead, we distract ourselves, focusing on consuming and creating beauty - the survival strategies of an artist. The anxiety waits, patiently anticipating our return to the twilight zone between waking and sleeping.

Recreating this liminal space, the exhibition Sleepless Nights unfolds in a dark room via blacklights, nightlights, phone screens, and projectors. The room is infused with a continuous stream of audio, a background score of current events, news updates, podcasts, and other data. The exhibition features work by artists working in a wide variety of media and methods, but connected by their anxieties, drive to create, and hope for the future. The artists display their work within an environment of the unease within which it is created. Each artwork becomes a talisman to hold our anxieties at bay.

Sleepless Nights is a space for reflection and introspection, where visitors can engage with their own cares and concerns as well as the uncertainties of the wider world. It is an invitation to look beyond the veil of busyness and productivity to confront the deeper fears that lie within us all.""
