March 1 Grand Style Folk Art

Copalito is a show of vintage folk art from Oaxaca. Manuel Jiménez Ramírez (1919 - 2005) originated alebrijes, wood-carved animals painted with bright contrasting colors. Since they have been carved by many famiies.

Señor Ramírez story is worth a read, in the folklore of the region he was considered a nahual, a shaman who could shapeshift to animal and shares a soul with an animal guardian. https://en.artemarakame.com/Blogs/about-Oaxacan-alebrijes-2/biography-of-manuel-jimenez.

This show is simpler animal carvings in the alebrijes tradition. There is also a book on the art form, Animals of Oaxaca, by Shinji Iwamoto for sale in the shop.

"By the early 60s [Ramírez] had outgrown the gallery that first promoted his work, and they in turn were actively looking for wood carvers who could fulfill the demand for the style of work Jimenez had created. the four Santiago brothers, farmers by trade, also turned out to be brilliant and prolific. the illusive Zarate family began making work at this time, and the gifted carver Isidoro Cruz was hired by the government to teach the art form in the region and promote it in the rest of Mexico. By the 1970s, Jimenez's animalitos had taken on a life of their own, as the number of carvers continued to grow and the sons and daughters of the first wave of artists took up the craft."

February 12 Know What I'm Sayin?

Atelier Yaffe hosts a showing of movie Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat and a discussion.

The movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5zCOoWCwuQ traces the history of the Belgian Congo using historical footage on the cusp between colony and independence in 1960. It did not go well.

At the time was a great game for influence between the Soviet Union and the United States.

In the lead up to independence rival groups, funded by Western interests, struggled for control of the mineral-rich country. In June 1960, Patrice Lumumba was selected prime minister by the new elected parliament. In September, he was overthrown by Mobutu Sese Seko in a military coup. In January 1961, he was executed and his body disappeared.

The struggle between East and West played out in the UN, shown in the movie, and with American cultural diplomacy. America sent Lous Armstrong in October 1960 to perform to great acclaim. Armstrong later questioned his involvement while the CIA throughout worked to remove Lumumba. There is a short segment with Larry Devlin.

The film includes many scenes of black musicians of the time who were leaders in the ultimately successful civil rights movement. Is there more work to do? Absolutely. What is the role today of black music in that?

"Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat explores how Black music, culture, and global politics intersect — revealing who controls culture, whose voices are amplified, and what histories are erased or reclaimed. This gathering invites community into reflection, conversation, and collective learning drawing from African and Diasporic wisdom, Sankofa, and Ubuntu to look within and move forward together."

The Cascade Festival of African Films opened yesterday. Today's matine is documentary Ernest Cole: Lost and Found. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzS95TW6edU His photojournalism in South Africa from about 1958 to 1966 and in the US and Sweden until his death in 1990, captures eras with no filters. After this festival showing, the film is available on several streaming outlets for a small fee.

He published one book, House of Bondage, at age 27. It played a role in the ultimately successful end of apartheid 27 years later. He died of cancer at age 49 in poverty, his nagatives lost, and few prints ever made. In 2017 his nagatives, recordings, and papers, were mysteriosly found, are preservied at Wits, managed by his family. This film is the result.

The film is narrated from his diaries and the picture from his still and movie archives, supplemented by contemporaneous material by other photographers.

A later group of photographers, Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich, Ken Oosterbroek, and João Silva, documented the lead up to the 1994 elections in South Africa. That was the first election in which all South Africans could vote, with voters going from 5 million to 25 million. The country almost devolved into civil war. Photographer Oosterbroek perished in a crossfire. I credit that moment with motivating a withdrawal from the brink of civil war and the IFP rebels joining the election. Those photographers were documented in film The Bang Bang Club. Sadly some want to take us into a "papers / passbook, please," no is not an answer world in the US today.

February 5 - 26 Botanical Superfund

It has been said "the solution to pollution is dilution." And for eons that included throwing it into rivers and the ocean.

While the ocean is big, humans are not immune to ocean pollution as demonstrated by Minamata Disease and mercury bioaccumulation in seafood. An estimated 45% of mercury pollution is caused by burning coal. Then, of course, plastics, dramatized by Seattle artist https://www.chrisjordan.com/ including his film Alabatros. Micro- and nano-plastics are in our bodies.

I worked in a laboratory studying sewage and I can guarantee poop flows downhill.

Once upon a time, as little Portland grew, we dumped many bad things into the Willamette River. President Nixon famously created the EPA in the long arc from Walden, to Silent Spring, and Earth Day.

We owe a lot to Silent Spring, which influenced the thinking of President Kennedy. The author was a force of nature and her life story fascinating.

In 1976 toxic waste was discovered at the Love Canal in Niagra Falls.

In response at the end of 1980, President Carter signed into law the Superfund Program as a result of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980. That was passed in the House 351–23, and the Senate by a voice vote.

The Superfund program cleans up severely polluted places. The former McCormick & Baxter plant that treated utility poles and railroad ties with wood preservatives is its own special superfunt site, predating the Willamette Harbor one. The preservers left hazmat, went bankrupt, and left their problems for us.

That location has a completed Superfund cleanup remediation with a sealed cap and will now be transformed into a garden park by the river.

Maitripa College invites you to observe and process the creation of a Tibetan sand mandala over 3 days. It is a Buddha of Medicine (Menla) mandala created by the Gaden Shartse Monks. It is created as part of their Sacred Harmony 2026 World Peace Tour.

Portland is home to many Tibetan families from the Tibetan Resettlement Project enabled by 1000 visas set aside in the Immigration Act of 1990 signed by President George H W Bush. Each Tibetan had a host family and a job in Portland or 22 other US cities.

"Although the prompt is the title is a work in the show, we could say the exhibition is centered on a work entitled The Car Becoming The Deer, The Cart Becoming The Horse, and The Carrot Becoming The Donkey (2025). It won’t be too much of a spoiler to tell you that this film is a carousel of 80 35mm slides produced through a process involving Xeroxes and packing tape and gridded scans of the ersatz animal skins of deflated inflatables.

This is a show of echoes and afterlives, traces, shadows (and light), vestigial technologies, and what remains.

The crux here may be the relationship of photographic and print technologies to those of the moving image. And what it means to think of that in the digital era. Or perhaps we could say something about the long tail of post-Fountain deskilling and/or/also щөiяd reskilling (as opposed to the usual conceptual or intellectual reskilling, but that too). Or perhaps something about the role of the hand in a work otherwise in the shadow of the work of art’s mechanical reproducibility."

December 19 Honey

Wasps were carnivores, eating other insects. About 120 million years ago they went vegan, living on nectar and pollen. What unfolded was the coevolution of honey bees and flowering plants. Bees are fast learners and have a sense of smell exceeding bloodhounds. Much of our food is pollinated by bees, and what the world needs now is more flowers. Let's not kill bees off, please.

December 6 & 7 Marine Air

The Unkles family is one of Portland unsung art patrons. They rent space for artist studios. They parlayed the family business into buying warehouses. In the 1990s warehouses were plentiful and inexpensive. But city regulation, and the lust by tech for warehouse offices, ended that. The Unkles family maintains the tradition, only raising the rent when the studio changes artist.

Today is a rare opportunity to look inside one, the NW Marine Art Works. For these events, the artists usually straighten their studios. And, for this one, guest artists will bring work from the Seed Building, River Studios, the Boathouse, and Carton services deemed not suited for large events by the City. They have also invited artists and crafters from outside the Unkles family studios.

November 5 Eastside Art Openings

Earthbound Dracology is a show by three illustrators. They win the unusual copywriting award for the month.

"These five dragons do not fly.

All bear wings, yet all remain pressed to the ground: rooted, folded, listening to the slow breath of matter. What emerges through the paintings is a Dracology of earth —a mythology born from touch, smell, humidity, sediment, and the dense tactility of guache and pastel.

December 4 Everyday Materials

KSMOCA is situated in a pre-K/K-5 school. It is the other arts magnet school. It's too cool. It started with art parents, adopted by social practice professors, it engages students with working artist residencies. Every child is an artist. The goal is not to lose that in doubt.

Yoonhee Choi makes large fields of small objects using everyday materials and works on paper with a simipar feel, almost like maps. Spring Stroll is her project with the student artists of KSMOCA.

The project included paper making and dyes with each grade based on the obangsaek color system.

The exhibition opening takes place in the Cafetorium hallway and is open to the public.

November 20-23 Rothko

The Portland Art Museum reopens after remodeling, re-hanging the collection, and joining the two buildings with the Rothko Pavilion. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are free for all. Advance tickets are required, with a limited number of walkups subject to capacity.

Mark Rothko came to Portland as an immigrant from Latvia at age 10. No ICE in those days. He graduated from Lincoln, then went to Yale. He had an arc of painting styles before settling into his abstract colorfields. The museum has an arrangement with the Rothko family to borrow a rotating set of paintings. They have their own gallery and the work shows his arc.

By the Whitsell there is a new very large LED screen for digital works. Now is a very surreal maximalist fantasy a la Bosch. Several galleries mix eras in a theme, like the Seattle Asian did, very different from the previous Mark building chronologiclal layout. They have on loan a video installation by Swiss artst Pipilotti Rist. Some favorites are in storage for now and the currators will continue rearranging the collection.

The Rothko Pavilian is all windows, so it has light-proof sculptures, and innumerable couches and chairs. It would be a great place for a date-day, and the galleries throughout have ample seating. The pavilion has some outdoor patios, facing East and West, There is also a cafe which, with its own entrance, no ticket needed, and both indoor and outdoor seating.

First Thursday free days are on break, so now would be a great time to join the museum and make it your own. They have a sale on membership 15% off, one year, 30% off two years.

The movie "calls attention to the fickle economies of the US news cycle to offer personal counter-narratives of Iraq through a collection of experimental nonfiction works."

Iraq was designated by President Bush II as an "Axis of Evil" country. The invasion was justified on the basis that it it "would pay for itself" by seizing the oil reserves. That little misadventure cost $2-3 billion, contributed between 10-30% of the national debt, and lost about half a million lives.
