August 30 Alberta Foot Symphony

The last Thursday in August happens while many of the people behind its founding are at the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada. And the new fire chief's rules about the distance between the performer and audience makes fire performances almost impossible on the street. Expect a low key sea of dreams and people.

Sometimes we hew to our subcultures. But it's also fun to head out to events with wide appeal, like the annual Oregon Symphony in Waterfront Park. It's a great opportunity to hear light classical music excerpts and have a picnic. It starts early with the Portland Youth Philharmonic and includes the Black Swan segment of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake danced by the Oregon Ballet. The evening concludes with the literal war horse Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. At Tom McCall Waterfront Park 1020 Naito Pkwy. 5PM Free
