We have met photographer Gregory Crewdson over an artistic dinner and heard him explain his process. We like. That's why we have mentioned him a few times here.
Tonight and tomorrow you have an opportunity to get the film version. Brief Encounters is a documentary that shows Crewdson at work. Not only is Crewdson a brilliant creative artist, but he has been supportive of his students, launching several significant careers, such as that of Justine Kurland, and an entire genre of photography. Curious if the film includes his Sanctuary work, a recent change in direction.
Friday, Portland Art Museum's photography curator Julia Dolan will give a 20-minute presentation before, film 7:30. Saturday, Reed curator Stephanie Synder, who has brought Crewdson's work and the artist himself to Portland, introduces the film. The Portland Art Museum's Bruce Guenther curated a Crewdson work featured in the film into the excellent Disquieted exhibition in 2010. Recommended and especially strongly recommended for photographers.
