November 19 Curating Explorer Violet Ride

Portland artist Katy Knowlton opens her latest project, Violet's Diary, this evening. The violet part is a reference to violet in fires which spans cultures and continents. Violet fire is mystical. She has previously shown work at Place and Multiplex and has a variety of independent projects. Michelle Grabner is the curator of the Portland2016 Biennial at Disjecta. She is chair of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago department of painting and drawing, was a co-curator of the 2014 Whitney and has several regional curation projects. The New Explorers is a book profiling women artists doing art work on and about the landscape. "Explorers" is a good narrative brand, but contemporary art pales in relation to the history of women explorers when exploring was fierce. The author, Kris Timken, speaks this evening, along with artists in the book Linda K Johnson and Camille Seaman. The discussion will be moderated by curator Prudence Roberts.
