Some of the top studio monitors in the world are made in Portland Oregon by Barefoot Sound. They range up to $22,000 per pair. These would be found in recording studios and studios doing mastering - the final voicing of a recording before it goes to each of the distribution formats - to you.
Their designer speaks here this evening. Thomas Barefoot, an engineer who decided not to finish his PhD because it seemed boring, started young in his audio career, age 13. The magic of his speakers is the digital electronics which manage the division of sound between low, mid and high frequency drivers, solid vibration-controlled cabinets - they weigh 70 pounds - and a design which can work at a range of listening distances.
