October 5 Westside Art Openings

Karolin Klüppel has Mädchenland, Kingdom of Girls, documentation of young people in Assam, India. They are indigenous Khasi people photographed in their town of Mawlynnong. Thomas Roma has Plato's Dogs, photos of the shadows of dogs. Kim Ray and D. Scott Clark have an installation, Reliquary: The Stuff We Save. Mel Katz was in the thick of the NY art world of the 1950s. He has lived and taught in Portland for many years, bringing that experience. He has Options, abstract wall sculptures fabricated of aluminum. Betty Merken has Continuum pigment-saturated minimal sculpture and painting. The weather will be perfect tonight for the RACC projection series which takes place in a parking lot at Park and Glisan. Pepper Pepper and friends will perform live. Their fun drag stylings will be captured live, sent through a kaleidoscopic MAX patch and projected on the large blank wall of the RACC building. Fun. We hope to see this around throughout the year. Gallery 114 is a member coop, similar to Blackfish. It is a useful model, along with Tokyo's short rental gallery shows. They do video press releases which is interesting. But they are rarely on my sonar. This month they have guest Horatio Yung-Yan Law with Burnt Offerings, along with Mary Jo Mann with Un-Becoming, contrasting weeds and houseless humans in our urban environment. The Jewish Museum has a permanent collection and traveling shows. They will be open until 8 on First Thursday in the previous Contemporary Craft Museum space.
