August 4 Sun, Shadows, Stone+

Portland photographer Terry Toedtemeier was a cofounder of the Blue Sky Gallery and founding curator of photography at the Portland Art Museum. He built the museum's collection.

A retrospective of his work, Sun, Shadows, Stone, closes at the Museum today.

Photography became practical about the time of the American Civil War. The military hired photographers to document that war. Post the war, many of those photographers were employed on great expeditions to document the Western United States. Photographers William Henry Jackson, Timothy O'Sullivan, and others made enduring images of the Western landscape. The intent of the government was to encourage settlers. But the stunning large format exposures also supported Transcendentalist beliefs and offered an existence proof of God in the beauty of nature for many.

A self-taught photographer who studied geology, Toedtemeier continued the tradition of the great Western photographic expeditions, but with a more humble Northwest spirit.

This afternoon, there will be a panel discussion of his work.

Panelists are: Julia Dolan, Ph.D., The Minor White Curator of Photography at the Portland Art Museum; Rock Hushka, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Tacoma Art Museum; Sandra Phillips, Curator Emerita of Photography, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Toby Jurovics, Chief Curator and Holland Curator of American Western Art at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska; and Prudence Roberts, former Curator of American Art, Portland Art Museum.
