Matsuo Bashō is one of the greatest poets of the Edo period. He enjoyed renku, and in particular, collaborative renku as exquisite corpse. His haiku is renowned.

One work, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, 奥の細道 Oku no Hosomichi, is a poetic narrative of a walking trip.

Yukiyo Kawano has created work of hand-dyed silk and paper, Narrow Road to the Deep North - After Matsuo Basho, inspired by Basho's original. Kawano carries within her family history as granddaughter of a survivor of the Hiroshima bomb. Non-Japanese cannot understand the social dynamics of that history which has been recapitulated in the events at Fukushima Daiichi.
